Oldham Athletic second best to Spanish La Liga side Girona FC

July 27, 2017 by Tony Bugby

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, GIRONA FC 2

Oldham Athletic suffered their first pre-season defeat following a home loss against La Liga side Girona FC.

It was a rare chance for Latics to test themselves against a leading team as Girona have just been promoted to Spain’s top division.

And the class of the Spanish side was evident from the start as they quickly raced to a 2-0 lead.

Girona controlled the game and Courtney Duffus’ last-minute goal proved little more than a consolation.

Girona opened the scoring 60 seconds into the game through captain Eloi Amagat who curled in an exquisite shot into the far corner of the net.

The visitors made it 2-0 after 15 minutes when Aday Benitez slotted home at the front post after a good save from trialist goalkeeper Niklas Bolten.

Latics were struggling to get hold of the ball, but created a number of chances as they searched for a way back into the game.

Cameron Dummigan headed wide the midway through the half while Ollie Banks thundered a shot past the far post.

Aaron Amadi-Holloway headed over just before half time as Latics struggled to deal with their Spanish opponents.

A host of changes at the break followed and one of those, Tope Obadeyi almost caught the goalkeeper out on the hour mark but he managed to palm away his effort.

Latics finally found a route to goal in the final minute when Courtney Duffus was fouled in the penalty area. He picked himself up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make the score from the spot, the last action of the game.
