Matty Longstaff scores on his Newcastle United Premier League debut to heap more pressure on Manchester United

Manchester United’s woes continued with a 1-0 defeat at St James Park to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United with 19-year-old Matty Longstaff scoring the winner.

Premier League debutant Longstaff, playing alongside his brother Sean, scored the winner 18 minutes from time for the Magpies.

He had already struck the crossbar early on but the younger Longstaff hit the winner at the Gallowgate End after Allan Saint-Maximin picked out Jetro Willems who pulled the ball back to the teenager who blasted a 25 yard effort past David De Gea.

The Magpies held on for a famous win, and an emotional one for former Reds player and current Newcastle manager Steve Bruce who finally recorded a win as a manager against his old club at the 23rd attempt and in his 400th Premier League game as a manager.

United once again proved to be little threat with just three shots on target in the north east after a dire display in the Netherlands against AZ Alkmaar when they didn’t manage a single shot on target.

Victor Lindelof was missing for the Reds, with Diogo Dalot coming into the side after the Swedish defender aggravated a back injury the Alkmaar game.

Harry Maguire went closest for United, sending a free header wide for the Reds who have now picked up just nine points from their opening eight Premier League games this season and haven’t won in five games since a 1-0 win over Astana in the Europa League in September.

It’s now their worst start to the season since a haul of just eight Premier League points in 1989-90 when they went on to finish 13th.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team sit just two points above the relegation zone in 12th.
