Manchester United 2, Nottingham Forest 0 – Carabao Cup – Player Ratings

February 1, 2023 by Paul Chan

Manchester United 2, Nottingham Forest 0 (Carabao Cup Semi Final, United win 5-0 on Aggregate)

Second half strikes by Anthony Martial and Fred saw Manchester United through to the Carabao Cup final with a 5-0 aggregate win over Nottingham Forest.

United needed substitutions to turn the tide against a stubborn Nottingham Forest side with Marcus Rashford setting up both goals. One for fellow sub Anthony Martial, and the second a tap in for Fred.

And after a rousing welcome back for Jadon Sancho the Reds will now be off to Wembley to face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 2, Nottingham Forest 0 (Carabao Cup Semi Final, United win 5-0 on Aggregate)

Tom Heaton: 7. One handed save from Danilo to keep a clean sheet.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7. Easy night for him.

Raphael Varane: 7. Solid at the back. Carried on after injury scare.

Lisandro Martinez: 6. Got around the pitch but relatively unfussy night.

Shaw: 7. Good crossing from advanced positions and free kicks.

Bruno Fernandes: 7. Quiet evening by his standards. Was given telling off from the sidelines by Erik Ten Hag. Improved thereafter and could have set up a goal if Jadon Sancho was quicker to react.

Casemiro: 8. Had a chance to add to his goal tally early on but saw his chance saved by Wayne Hennessey. Almost set up an opening goal for Wout Weghorst and was given plenty of room to stroke passes around. Headed wide from a short corner and had another shot saved by Hennessey.

Fred: 7. Got his boot into some meaty tackles – a running battle with Scarpa – and grabbed a nice easy goal into an open net off his shin.

Antony: 6. Predictably favoured his left foot, but what a left foot! Great shot over the bar in the first half.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6. Troubled the Nottingham Forest right flank with some direct running. Up for the fight to the point where he had a physical confrontation with Brennan Johnson in the second half but escaped a VAR check for red card and then had a shot saved by Wayne Hennessey.

Wout Weghorst: 6. Great chance at the end of the first half saved by Wayne Hennessey.

Jadon Sancho (on for Antony, 63): 6. Big smile on his face when he was reintroduced. Reacted slowly to a cutback by Bruno Fernandes.

Anthony Martial (on for Wout Weghorst, 63): 6. Offside when he had a great chance to score but bagged the opener after getting to the loose ball after Marcus Rashford’s shot was blocked.

Marcus Rashford (on for Alejandro Garnacho, 63): 7. Had a penalty shout turned down and set up both goals.

Harry Maguire (on for Raphael Varane, 80): No time to mark

Victor Lindelof (on for Casemiro, 80): No time to mark
