Manchester United and Celtic to meet in legends match to raise funds for Manchester United Foundation

July 20, 2024 by Tony Bugby

Manchester United Foundation has signed legendary players to take part in a charity match between Manchester United and Celtic at Old Trafford on September 7.

Antonio Valencia, Dimitar Berbatov, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are the first big names to sign up to manager Bryan Robson’s squad. Andy Cole is also set to return as assistant manager.

Valencia, who appeared in the legends’ game against Liverpool in 2022, is already relishing the chance to perform again in front of the United supporters.

“I’m so much looking forward to it,” the Ecuadorian said. “Every time that I get the invitation, I make sure that I can be there. It’s going to be fun to see so many friends, the stadium and my former team-mates.

“What the Foundation does for young people around the Manchester area, and elsewhere – I know how much work goes into it.”

Berbatov who scored against Liverpool in the legends match of 2022, is also looking forward to another Old Trafford return.

“It’s always good to be back with the boys, have some banter, play some football, enjoy it and in the process raise money for a good cause,” he said.

“It’s good that we former players can have the chance to raise money for all the different things that the Foundation is doing and just enjoying doing it while we play football.”

United Legends take on their Celtic counterparts at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 7 (2pm).

In May 2022, the legends match against Liverpool raised over £1.3 million. Once again, all proceeds from this event will go towards the Foundation’s work with young people across Greater Manchester and beyond.
