Manchester United have announced that they have reached an agreement to sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as they look to improve their squad.
Embed from Getty ImagesUnited reportedly triggered Cunha’s £62.5m release clause after days of negotiations and the Brazilian will join the club after visa and registration formalities are complete.
It is believed that Cunha, 26, will sign a five year deal with an option for a further year and was reportedly in Manchester completing a medical prior to the announcement.
He is expected to formally join United after the post season international break.
While Cunha can also play as a striker, he is also at home in a number 10 role as a mercurial playmaker.
In two and a half seasons with Wolves Cunha had netted 33 goals in 92 appearances and also has 13 caps for Brazil’s senior team – scoring a total of 72 goals in 270 appearances across the English, Spanish, German, and Swiss leagues.
The arrival of Cunha is well timed considering that there could be some exits on the horizon.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly considering a massive offer to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
And they might also lose Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford – the latter’s number 10 shirt will reportedly be handed to Cunha as manager Ruben Amorim reshapes the United squad after a difficult first few months in charge.
United have already missed out on signing ex-Manchester City striker Liam Delap – he chose to join Chelsea from relegated Ipswich Town – following a record worst Premier League finish of 15th last term.
And while Cunha can play up front the Reds will almost certainly be looking for experienced specialists to play up front in a role where Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have underwhelmed.
United face a season without European football as they seek to rebuild and accept that attracting talent will be harder as a team seeking to return to Europe next season.
