Rains stops play but French storm Ukraine afterwards

June 15, 2012 by Paul Chan

FRANCE 2, UKRAINE 0

It might have started with an unprecedented hourlong stoppage due to a massive electrical storm that started during La Marseillaise and forced the referee to suspend the game for an hour at the Donbass Stadium after just five minutes of play.

Two second half goals for the French following the delayed restart deflated the hosts after they looked to have been gaining momentum soon after the restart.

Goals for Jeremy Menez and Yohan Cabaye silenced the home crowd soon after a brace of chances for Ukraine, including one by defensive player Anatoliy Tymoshchuk.

Cabaye hit the woodwork too as the game became comfortable for the former European Champions.
