Rio Ferdinand overlooked as Gary Cahill ruled out of Euro 2012

June 3, 2012 by Paul Chan

Gary Cahill has been ruled out of Euro 2012 with a double fracture of his jaw following a scan after his collision with Joe Hart at the weekend.

It’s a massive blow for England and the Chelsea defender who would have looked to start the campaign alongside team mate John Terry who came through his own fitness test on a tight hamstring with no issues.

Liverpool’s Martin Kelly was called up from the stand-by list subject to approval by UEFA and his inclusion would mean the England squad of 23 comprising six Liverpool players – more than any other club.

It is understood that United’s Rio Ferdinand was not asked despite the lack of experience in the defensive positions with Phil Jones likely to be used as backup to Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker in midfield rather than in his favoured central defensive role.
