Oldham Athletic break their duck with first win of the season at Doncaster Rovers

August 30, 2014 by Tony Bugby

DONCASTER ROVERS 0, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 2

Oldham Athletic finally registered that elusive first win of the season following a deserved 2-0 victory at Doncaster Rovers.

Goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jonathan Forte lifted Latics out of the relegation places and provided some much-needed cheer.

They had failed to win in five league and cup matches with the pressure mounting on manager Lee Johnson.

What made this success even sweeter was that it was against former manager Paul Dickov while there is also a sizeable contingent of former Latics personnel also at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Clarke-Harris opened the scoring after only four minutes firing home from a Mike Jones corner.

It was his first goal of the season and a relief to the player whose drought ended after he had been finding the net for fun in pre-season.

For some reason the goals suddenly dried up when the season kicked off so this will be a massive burden off the shoulders of the teenager.

They would have doubled their lead minutes later but for a decent save from Jed Steer to deny Jonathan Forter.

Doncaster created chances through former Latics’ pair Reece Wabara and Dean Furman, along with top scorer Kyle Bennett, but none could find a route to goal.

Latics doubled their lead just short of the hour moments after Doncaster had made a triple substitution. Danny Philliskirk was fouled by Rob Jones and Forte fired home the spot kick, his fourth goal of the season.

They had chances to win by a wider margin as Forte, Liam Kelly, Carl Winchester and Philliskirk who was denied by a super save from Steer.
