Win still eludes Oldham Athletic as Port Vale take a share of the spoils

August 19, 2014 by Tony Bugby

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, PORT VALE 1

A win continues to elude Oldham Athletic as they were held at home by Port Vale in Sky Bet League One.

Latics had to battle from behind for a share of the spoils against the Valiants through a goal from James Wilson.

But, in the overall scheme of things it was another disappointing result for Latics who have picked up two points from a possible nine and also been knocked out of the Capital One Cup.

There was a first start of the season for Danny Philliskirk as Latics looked for more of a cutting edge against their opponents from the Potteries.

It looked as though it was going to be another long. hard night when Tom Pope headed Vale ahead after only nine minutes from a Ben Williamson corner.

Jonsson Clarke-Harris saw an effort clear off the line just before the break, the closest Latics came to an equaliser.

The striker had earlier gone close as had the in-form Jonathan Forte who had scored three goals in his previous two starts.

Latics finally drew level just short of the hour when Wilson headed home a teasing corner from Mike Jones.

However, it was Vale who came closest to collecting all three points when Michael O’Connor headed against the crossbar.

Late on, Latics went close when a Joseph Mills free kick was turned over the crossbar by visiting keeper Sam Johnstone as they had to settle for one point.

And there was a disappointingly low crowd of 3,592 which, when the 749 visitors were deducted, left 2,843 home fans as many had voted with their feet and stayed away following two previous heavy home losses.
