Oldham Athletic held at home by Red Devils as Crawley Town snatch point

November 15, 2014 by Tony Bugby

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, CRAWLEY TOWN 1

Oldham Athletic lost out on the chance to move back into the play-off places in Sky Bet League One after being held at home by Crawley Town.

It was a disappointing afternoon as Latics squandered a lead given to them by new loan-signing Daniel Johnson.

The Red Devils, who had failed to win in their last four games, hit back with a goal from Gwion Edwards as they were clearly the happier side.

Latics handed a debut to Johnson, signed from Aston Villa earlier in the week, and also recalled Timothee Dieng and Jabo Ibehre as Genseric Kusunga was away on international duty while Carl Winchester, who had been away with Northern Ireland, and Dominic Poleon dropped down to the bench.

Edwards thought he had given Crawley a third minute lead only to have his effort ruled out for offside.

But it was Latics who took the lead after seven minutes when Johnson burst into the box eluding a number of challenges before firing low past keeper Jamie Ashdown.

Latics were on the front foot and Danny Philliskirk failed to take three opportunities to extend the lead in the opening period.

Then three minutes before the break, Crawley snatched an equaliser when Edwards fired home from 25 yards, but Latics ought to have cleared the danger.

Latics brought on Michael Tidser for Jonathan Forte at the restart in an effort to strengthen the centre of midfield.

Mike Jones, playing against his former club, had two chances to regain the lead for Latics. Ashdown pulled off a good save and then a drive was deflected wide for a corner.

Dieng also headed wide from inside the six-yard box as Latics piled forward in pursuit of a match-winning goal.

Then Crawley almost caught Latics on the break with 10 minutes left when Edwards shot narrowly wide from 25 yards as the game petered out into stalemate.
