Oldham Athletic fail to make extra man pay as they are held at home by Wigan Athletic

September 26, 2015 by Tony Bugby

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, WIGAN ATHLETIC 1

Oldham Athletic were held to a home draw by 10-man Wigan Athletic in David Dunn’s first home game as interim manager.

It was an encouraging display by Latics as Dominic Poleon scored an equaliser three minutes after Wigan were reduced in numbers following Jordan Flores’ sending off.

Max Power had given Wigan the lead late in the opening half and they had largely been in control until the sending off changed the dynamics of the game.

And at the end Dunn had four strikers on the pitch as his side chased a winning goal.

Dunn handed debuts to new loan signings Jay Fulton and Michael Higdon while there was a return after injury for captain Liam Kelly.

The players to lose out were Carl Winchester, Mark Yeates and Poleon.

Latics, who were playing Wigan for the first time since 2002/03, could have taken a ninth-minute lead when Swansea loanee Fulton crossed for Higdon to head against the upright.

It was a largely uneventful game until Wigan took the lead after 34 minutes when Power was afforded space on the edge of the penalty area to fire low past keeper David Cornell.

And they almost doubled their lead not long after when Cornell did well to tip a shot from Michael Jacobs round the post for a corner.

In a frenzied finish to the opening half, Higdon and Timothee Dieng had chances to equalise while Cornell did well to deny Chris McCann as Wigan came close to adding a second.

Poleon replaced the tiring Kelly after an hour and he almost made an immediate impact shooting over the crossbar.

The turning point of the game came with 20 minutes left when Flores was sent off for kicking out at Fulton following a hefty challenge.

And that lifted Latics who equalised three minutes later when substitute Yeates and Higdon combined to set up Poleon who scored from six yards.

They could well have taken the lead minutes later, but Higdon dragged his shot into the side netting.

Latics laid siege to the Wigan goal late on as Mike Jones, Fulton and Poleon all had half chances as Wigan were grimly holding on for a point.
