Stephen Robinson sacked as Oldham Athletic manager and John Sheridan reappointed for third spell at helm

January 12, 2017 by Tony Bugby

Oldham Athletic sacked manager Stephen Robinson and appointed John Sheridan making the announcement simultaneously.

Robinson’s unhappy stay came to an end with Tuesday’s embarrassing Checkatrade Trophy defeat at League Two club Mansfield Town his final fixture.

It had been an unsuccessful six months at the helm, one that saw Latics win only three out of 24 league matches to lie rooted bottom in Sky Bet League One and also knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup at non-league Lincoln City.

Remarkably Sheridan, recently sacked by Notts County, is starting his third spell as permanent manager as well as having two other brief spells as caretaker.

Robinson was the sixth manager in less than two turbulent years as he was preceded by Lee Johnson, Dean Holden, Dean Kelly, David Dunn and Sheridan.

Sheridan’s last spell began last January with Latics bottom of the table having won only three league games.

But a remarkable spell, in which Latics won nine games out of 17, saw Sheridan pull off the great escape and keep the club in the third tier of English football.

The club statement read: “Oldham Athletic can this afternoon confirm that Stephen Robinson has had his contract terminated and that John Sheridan has been appointed as the club’s new manager.

Chairman Simon Corney said: “This is obviously a difficult decision. Stephen is a talented coach who we believed could make the transition into a successful manager.

“Unfortunately things have not worked out for him or the club and we felt that a change needed to be made.

“I’d like to thank Stephen for the hard work and commitment he has shown and wish him well for the future.

“John is obviously someone we know well and we hope he can have an immediate effect on our current situation.”

The club will not be commenting further at this stage.
