Oldham Athletic leave it late to snatch a draw at Doncaster Rovers

December 16, 2017 by Tony Bugby

DONCASTER ROVERS 1, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1

Eoin Doyle ended his goalscoring drought as his late strike earned a point for Oldham Athletic at Doncaster Rovers.

The striker fired home his 14th goal of the season following a flick on from substitute Aaron Amadi-Holloway to earn a share of the spoils. It ended a run of five games without a goal.

Andy Butler had given Doncaster Rovers the lead but Doyle’s 12th league goal of the campaign secured a point.

Manager Richie Wellens made one enforced change from last weekend’s 5-1 victory over Northampton Town as Cameron Dummigan missed the game through illness. He was replaced by Brian Wilson.

Gevaro Nepomuceno had the first chance of the game after five minutes when the winger fired over from 25 yards.

Rovers’ striker John Marquis had two chances minutes later but dragged both wide of Johny Placide’s goal.

Midway through the half came Latics’ best chance of the half. Tope Obadeyi raced 50 yards with the ball before taking on three Doncaster defenders. He rolled the ball into the path of Nepomuceno whose fierce effort beat the goalkeeper but not Butler on the line.

Latics had to be aware minutes later as a long ball over the top found Alfie May. The striker was through on goal and only had Placide to beat but the goalkeeper managed to make a fantastic one-handed save.

Both sides struggled to get into their rhythm throughout the dreary half with no other clear cut chances created.

The second period started much the same as the first with neither side dictating the play.

Rovers made the breakthrough on the hour when Anthony Gerrard was booked for a foul on May and from Tommy Rowe’s free kick Butler headed past Placide to put the home side ahead.

That saw Wellens make a double change as Ryan McLaughlin and Craig Davies were introduced for Rob Hunt and Nepomuceno to try and find a way back into the game.

Latics switched to a 3-5-2 formation and had a lot of attacking intent but struggled to create openings.

Wellens threw his last throw of the dice as he brought on Amadi-Holloway for Obadeyi and he almost equalised with his first touch, but dragged his shot wide.

Latics threw everything at their hosts and finally made the breakthrough in the 88th minute.

A cross from Gardner was flicked on by Amadi-Holloway and Doyle tapped home at the back post.

It was nothing more than Latics deserved but they had a chance to win the game in the five minutes of additional time.

Davies thought he grabbed the winner in the first minute of additional time as he fired into the top corner but the assistant’s flag was raised for a foul.

Oldham Athletic (4-4-2): Placide; Wilson, Bryan, Gerrard, Hunt (McLaughlin 62); Fane, Gardner, Byrne, Nepomuceno (Davies 62); Obadeyi (Holloway 74), Doyle. Subs (not used): Wilson, Clarke, Green, Flynn.

Goals: Butler (60) for Doncaster. Doyle (88) for Oldham.

Attendance: 7,831 (851 visitors).
