Manchester United vs Derby County – Player Ratings as Frank Lampard beats his old boss

September 25, 2018 by Paul Chan

MANCHESTER UNITED 2, DERBY COUNTY 2 (Derby County win 8-7 on penalties)

Frank Lampard’s Derby County recorded a famous victory on penalties at Old Trafford, eliminating Manchester United after the Reds had fought their way back from 2-1 down to draw 2-2, after Phil Jones missed a sudden death penalty.

For 25 minutes, United were well on top in their Carabao Cup encounter but they were made to pay for their profligacy after only having Juan Mata’s goal to show for it in the first half.

Jose Mourinho made nine changes to United’s lineup from the draw against Wolves at the weekend – only Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard kept their places – the Reds were 1-0 up inside three minutes and could have been out of sight by the 20th minute with Ashley Young hitting the post amid a flurry of chances for the Reds.

The Reds instead found themselves level after an hour when Harry Wilson equalised with a stunning, looping, dipping, shot past Sergio Romero and a man light when Romero was sent off for handling the ball outside his area with the on-loan Liverpool man trying to get past him.

The Reds were let down by some poor finishing – Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial were the main offenders but Mata could have had a second shortly after his opening goal.

Lukaku also hit the post while Martial wasted a host of chances himself but the Rams could have taken the lead 12 minutes from time when substitute Florian Jozefzoon’s shot from Jayden Bogle’s cross was tipped away by Lee Grant.

There was drama to come as Mason Mount’s strike was parried away by Grant but Jack Marriott was there to head the rebound in after the ball was not cleared five minutes from time but the Rams couldn’t hold on.

Diogo Dalot produced a cross from the right in the fifth minute of added time and Marouane Fellaini headed in the equaliser to take it to penalties.

It wasn’t to be United’s night though, and Frank Lampard’s team won it after Phil Jones had the Reds’ eighth spot kick saved by Scott Carson to seal a famous victory for the Rams.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 2, Derby County 2

Sergio Romero: 5. Brave save at the feet of Mason Bennett, sent off after handball.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Added presence in defence and ended up producing the cross that Fellaini equalised from.

Eric Bailly: 5. Should have scored a goal himself and was poor in defence when it mattered.

Phil Jones: 5. Missing when David Nugent put Harry Wilson through. Tame penalty doomed the Reds to defeat in the shootout.

Ashley Young: 6. Hit the post from a corner and his long pass for Romelu Lukaku should have been converted. Needless foul on David Nugent gave away the free kick which Derby levelled from.

Nemanja Matic: 6. Found it difficult to stop the Derby midfield.

Ander Herrera: 6. Passed around by the Rams.

Juan Mata: 6. Great goal and could have had a second within 9 minutes but was sacrificed for Lee Grant after Sergio Romero was sent off.

Jesse Lingard: 6. Buzzed around the attack. Ineffective defensively.

Anthony Martial: 7. Constant danger down the left flank and could have had a hatful of assists if Lukaku had converted but was woefully wasteful in the second half.

Romelu Lukaku: 5. Missed a trio of early sitters and hit the post but couldn’t buy a shot on goal.

GOALS – Manchester United 2, Derby County 2

59. Harry Wilson’s stunning dipping left foot free kick from 30 yards levels it for Derby County after David Nugent was fouled by Ashley Young.

85. Mason Mount strike parried away by Lee Grant but Jack Marriott is there to head the rebound in after the ball was not cleared.

90+5. Diogo Dalot produced a cross from the right in the fifth minute of added time and Marouane Fellaini headed in the equaliser to take it to penalties.
