November 11, 2018 by Paul Chan

MANCHESTER CITY 3, MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Manchester City were comfortable winners in the Manchester derby, and though Manchester United did score a through Anthony Martial penalty they never threatened City who scored goals at crucial times throughout the game.

Early goals in each half by David Silva and Sergio Aguero put the home side 2-0 up but rivals Manchester United pulled one back before the hour mark through an Anthony Martial penalty.

United kept home fans on tenterhooks until Ilkay Gundogan made the result safe at the end with a fine finish following a deep cross by Bernardo Silva.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 3, Manchester United 1

Ederson: 6. Protected well by his defence but conceded another needless penalty after bringing down Romelu Lukaku 30 seconds after he came on for United.

Kyle Walker: 6. Had a challenge on with Martial on his flank. Linked well with Mahrez on the few occasions he went forward.

John Stones: 7. Good block on Anthony Martial but City – wasn’t worried until second half surge by United but did his fair share of blocks and interceptions.

Aymeric Laporte: 6. Showed good range of passing. Had to dig deep defensively later in the game.

Benjamin Mendy: 6. Some wobbly moments but little pressure on his flank from Jesse Lingard.

Fernandinho: 8. Some rangy passing from deep and not afraid to go forward or have a few shots on goal from distance. Good interceptions and blocks prevented United getting into range of Ederson’s goal.

Bernardo Silva: 9. Laid on David Silva’s goal, rugby tackled by Anthony Martial on another attack as United couldn’t track him and he drifted past the Reds at will with the ball stuck to his feet in the second half. His superb cross found Ilkay Gundogan late on for City’s third goal.

David Silva: 8. Man marked by Ander Herrera. Still managed to escape him for a cut back that was miscontrolled by Sergio Aguero early on and was there on the spot to open the scoring.

Raheem Sterling: 7. His flank was poorly guarded by Ashley Young but he kept United occupied even though he wasn’t on song today. Went up front as lone striker after Aguero went off. Crowd pleasing step-overs right at the end as City kept the ball.

Riyad Mahrez: 7. Some quick passing in the final third but most of the action was on the other flank. Laid on Sergio Aguero’s Exocet finish early after the break.

Sergio Aguero: 7. Could have earned a penalty before David Silva scored after being hauled down by Chris Smalling, he had a quiet first half. Came to life in the second half after exchanging passes with Riyad Mahrez early in the second half to score his 8th goal in Manchester derbies. Looked to be struggling a bit with a knock before he was replaced by Ilkay Gundogan.

Leroy Sane (for Riyad Mahrez 62): 6. Seemed to be off the pace of the game. Should have earned a penalty after Chris Smalling pushing him over in the box as City went for their 4th goal.

Ilkay Gundogan (for Sergio Aguero 75): 7. On to regain control of midfield, he ended up making it a comfortable win for City with a cool finish for City’s 3rd goal from 5 yards out from Bernardo Silva’s cross.

Phil Foden (for David Silva 90+2): On for his first derby appearance.

Manchester United Team Rating – Manchester City 3, Manchester United 1

United never lost confidence even after going a goal down after a poor start. City lost intensity allowing them to get back into the game, becalming the home crowd.

They kept the crowd quiet until the 86th minute in the second half when the scoreline was 2-1 but never really coherently threatened the City goal apart from scoring a penalty after a rush of blood by Ederson.
