It will be the first time the Reds have faced the French champions in a competitive game but Jose Mourinho’s men face a tricky test against the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

As English football’s only group winners this season Manchester City were drawn against Schalke 04.

The German outfit are struggling in the Bundesliga after losing eight of their 15 matches to sit 13th in contrast with high flying City who sit just a point below Liverpool in second with both clubs in a Premier League title scrap.

City will play the home leg second as a result of being the only English side to finish top of their Champions League group.

Schalke’s German rivals Borussia Dortmund were drawn against Tottenham and an ex-City player currently lighting up the German league – Jadon Sancho – could face Premier League opposition for the first time.

The 18-year-old England winger could find himself in demand this summer if he continues his form this season and proves his talent in the Champions League.

And Liverpool complete an English-German treble with a tie against German champions Bayern Munich who have struggled in their league this season.

Bayern lie a full nine points behind Dortmund in 3rd place but were unbeaten in the knockout round as Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will have a chance to get one over the side that beat his Dortmund side in the 2013 Champions League Final.
