10-man Southampton earn a draw against Manchester United

August 31, 2019 by Paul Chan

SOUTHAMPTON 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Southampton after Jannik Vestergaard’s equaliser cancelled out Daniel James’ opener.

Kevin Danso was sent off with 17 minutes to go for a second bookable offence but the Saints managed to hold on for a point against the Reds.

United were missing the injured Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw following their 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend.

They were replaced by Ashley Young and Juan Mata while Andreas Pereira was preferred to Jesse Lingard who was named on the bench.

James had scored his third goal for the club within 10 minutes with a cut inside from the left and precise finish into the roof of the net from 15 yards after being played in by Scott McTominay.

Southampton had allowed the Reds the space and were punished, and Ole’s men went on to dominate much of the match.

But United couldn’t sustain the pressure and the home side were given plenty of space in the second half as United lost concentration when Jannik Vestergaard rose above Victor Lindelof after 58 minutes to convert Danso’s cross past David De Gea from 6 yards out.

With a lead to protect, the Saints were down to 10 men with 17 minutes to go when Danso was sent off for a second booking following a reckless challenge on McTominay.

It was foolish for the player on his first home appearance for the Saints and Solskjaer went for broke – replacing McTominay with Mason Greenwood – after Danny Ings was withdrawn for Maya Yoshida.

Jesse Lingard was brought on and went close while Greenwood had a penalty appeal turned down and Angus Gunn saved well from the youngster but the Reds couldn’t break down their hosts and have won just once in four games this season now.
