It was only the third time in 21 games that the Reds had scored more than one goal in a game.

Both sides fielded change teams but United’s had a lot more experience on the pitch with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making just four changes from the side that beat Norwich City away.

Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo, Brandon Williams, Jesse Lingard came in for David De Gea, Ashley Young, Andreas Pereira, and Anthony Martial.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard changed 6 players from their 4-2 win at Burnley and played a young side against Solskjaer’s relative veterans.

United earned their third penalty in two games but unlike on Sunday at Norwich Rashford beat Chelsea ‘keeper Willy Caballero from the penalty spot after 25 minutes after Marcos Alonso gave away the spot kick.

In a game of few clear chances, United made the most of their possession against a youthful Chelsea side, with Lingard having a shot saved after Rashford created the chance for him.

Michy Batshuayi scored with Chelsea’s first shot on target in the 61st minute, breaking past four United players before rifling the ball past Sergio Romero and into the bottom right corner from outside the area.

It had been all Chelsea but United improved and Rashford smashed a 73rd free kick past Caballero into the top corner from over 30 yards out after Pedro’s foul.

It was Rashford’s fifth career goal against Chelsea in all competitions and his seventh United goal of the season.

The Blues were stung into action and Reece James had a shot saved for the home side.

Rashford was withdrawn for Ashley Young late on as Solskjaer looked to protect the lead with Harry Maguire seemingly nursing an injury in the late stages against an increasingly desperate Chelsea.

Anthony Martial could have ended the Chelsea resistance with a curling shot in injury time which went wide as the home side finally ran out of time.
