A side that was unchanged from the Manchester derby win initially looked to continue their good run of form against a resurgent Everton under Duncan Ferguson.

Both sides had early chances through Jesse Lingard and Mason Holgate.

Everton were twice undone by long passes from deep in the United half. Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay pierced the Everton back line but Marcus Rashford and Daniel James shot wide having cleared the retreating Toffees defence.

Rashford’s fierce free kick was also saved by Jordan Pickford with his left hand as United kept up the pressure and took control of the game after a shaky start.

Calvert-Lewin had a shot saved by David De Gea as Everton sporadically attacked before they scored a set piece goal through an own goal by Victor Lindelof.

Leighton Baines hadn’t been on long as a substitute when he put in a corner that De Gea failed to claim and the ball arced over the group of players attacking it only to bounce into the United goal off Scott McTominay’s thigh.

United hammered on the Everton door looking for an equaliser and one duly arrived after substitute Mason Greenwood cut inside after drive a low shot past Jordan Pickford from the edge of the area with 13 minutes to go.

It was the 7th goal of the season for the youngster who is now clear in second place for United goalscorers this season behind Marcus Rashford.

Alex Iwobi threatened for Everton while Baines saw a free kick go over the bar as the Blues kept fighting until the end and United ran out of ideas.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 1, Everton 1

David De Gea: 5. Twice saved from Mason Holgate long range efforts. Didn’t command his area when Everton scored though.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7. Kept both Luca Digne and Leighton Baines quiet. Great sliding tackle to dispossess Richarlison in the box before we went clean through. Offered little going forward.

Victor Lindelof: 5. Some good distribution but was statuesque when Leighton Baines’ corner came in and bounced into the United goal off his thigh. A second half shot had Pickford diving across.

Harry Maguire: 7. Generally comfortable with aerial challenge but missed the goal. Spent long stretches in the Everton half helping with the build-up.

Luke Shaw: 7. Had a shot saved by Jordan Pickford as United upped the pace.

Scott McTominay: 8. Bossed midfield.

Fred: 7. Box to box performance, defensive cohesion, attacking in the final third and free kicks too.

Daniel James: 7. Had a belter of a follow-up shot which hit Jesse Lingard in the face. Also tested Pickford with a low drive but didn’t offer a consistent threat. Dropped deeper to provide the pass that set up Mason Greenwood for the equaliser.

Jesse Lingard: 5. Saw first effort of the game go wide after a lucky deflection off Tom Davies brought the ball to him. Faded quickly and was replaced after getting a ball in the face from Daniel James as United chased the game.

Marcus Rashford: 7. Sent a left footed drive wide after being released by Victor Lindelof, also off target in the second half and had shots saved by Jordan Pickford.

Anthony Martial: 6. Not had much service. Didn’t seem to be able to find space.

Mason Greenwood (on for Jesse Lingard, 65): 7. Another coolly taken goal under high pressure after being given a sighter earlier.
