Oldham Athletic lack firepower in loss at leaders Swindon Town

December 14, 2019 by Tony Bugby

SWINDON TOWN 2, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0.

Head coach Dino Maamria again bemoaned Oldham Athletic’s lack of firepower as they lost at Sky Bet League Two leaders Swindon Town.

The lack of goals – two in the last four matches – is the reason why Latics are languishing third bottom with their EFL status in jeopardy.

Former Latics’ head coach Richie Wellens savoured the victory which came through goals from Kaiyne Wollery and former Latics’ loanee Eoin Doyle.

Maamria made one change from the side held at home by Leyton Orient the previous week as midfielder Mohamed Maouche replaced striker Scott Wilson in a more conservative 4-2-3-1.

Latics started brightly as Dave Jones saw a deflected shot from the edge of the area fly just wide before Desire Segbe Azankpo had a from an effort from a tight angle saved by Steven Benda.

Maamria’s side continued their pressure as Maouche had a striker, but couldn’t keep his effort down.

The Robins grew into the game and their first chance of the game arrived in the 31st minute as Doyle flicked a long ball onto Woolery inside the penalty area, but the forward fired over the bar.

Just before half time Wellens’ side took the lead as Woolery cut inside from the right and blasted it low into the far corner past goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz.

The visitors thought they had found an equaliser as a dangerous low cross from the right found Alex Iacovitti at the back post but, somehow, he failed to hit the target, though he was flagged offside.

The Robins nearly doubled their lead moments later following a free kick landed at the feet of Keshi Anderson, but his effort was cleared off the line by Latics’ captain David Wheater.

Swindon had the ball in the net in the 81st as Doyle produced a clever finish past de la Paz, but he had strayed offside.

Minutes later Swindon secured victory as Doyle received the ball deep in Latics’ half before he drove towards goal and he curled his effort into the bottom corner, a ninth goal in nine games for the Irishman.

Goals: Woolery (45+1), Doyle (85) for Oldham.

Oldham Athletic (4-2-3-1):de la Paz, Hamer,  Wheater, Stott (Egert 26, Morais 52), Iacovitti; McCann, Jones (Fage 64); Mills, Maouche, Smith; Azankpo. Subs (not used): Woods, Sylla, Eagles, Wilson.

Attendance: 6,825.
