January 7, 2020 by Paul Chan

Manchester United 1, Manchester City 3 (Carabao Cup Semi Final 1st Leg)

Manchester United gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a second half Marcus Rashford goal after they were blown away by a three goal salvo by Manchester City in the first half of their Manchester derby Carabao Cup semi final first leg at Old Trafford.

City scored early through Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, and an Andreas Pereira own goal before Rashford ensured that United would still have a slim chance to recover the deficit at the Etihad.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 1, Manchester City 3 (Carabao Cup Semi Final 1st Leg)

Manchester United

David De Gea: 6. Contributed to City’s third goal by blocking Kevin De Bruyne’s shot only to see it come back off Andreas Pereira for an own goal. Stopped Riyad Mahrez efforts three times in the second half to keep United alive after being well beaten by him in the first half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6. Did battle with Raheem Sterling but the threat was elsewhere for City as the game changed.

Victor Lindelof: 4. Found it hard to keep up with City in the first half, gave away the ball for City’s second goal.

Phil Jones: 4. Helpless against the waves of City attacks and was left on his backside by Kevin De Bruyne as he went on to force City’s third goal.

Brandon Williams: 5. Outmuscled by Riyad Mahrez for City’s second goal.

Andreas Pereira: 5. Hapless chances wasted and scored own goal as he tried to help his defenders.

Fred: 5. Fully committed but was left too much to do in a passive midfield.

Daniel James: 5. Isolated, little chance to get on the ball and ran down blind alleys when he did.

Jesse Lingard: 4. Nasty foul on Bernardo Silva for which he was booked. Ineffective and subbed off.

Marcus Rashford: 6. Not much service but scored an excellent solo effort after outpacing Nicolas Otamendi and could have made it very interesting with a late long ranger which was dropped by Bravo.

Mason Greenwood: 6. Did his bit down the United right and played in Marcus Rashford for his goal.

Nemanja Matic (on for Jesse Lingard, 46): 6. On to shore up midfield and made United more solid.

Angel Gomes (for Daniel James, 64): 6. Got stuck in. Won the ball from which United pulled a goal back.

Anthony Martial (on for Mason Greenwood, 81): No time to mark

Manchester City

Claudio Bravo: 6. Came off his line confidently, got some good protection but had his usual dodgy moments in the second half.

Rodri: 7. Safe passing in a deep midfield role but United started to find ways past him in the second half.

Fernandinho: 8. Great clearances off the line, excellent distribution, and some classy interceptions too.

Nicolas Otamendi: 6. Worried about the pace of United’s forwards. Beaten by Marcus Rashford for his goal.

Kyle Walker: 7. Found himself upfield and laid on the Bernardo Silva’s opener. Battled from start to finish at the back.

Kevin De Bruyne: 7. Pushed up high. Forced an own goal by Andreas Pereira and could have laid on at least another if Raheem Sterling brought his shooting boots.

Ilkay Gundogan: 7. Kept midfield ticking over.

Benjamin Mendy: 7. At his energetic best for some time but looked like his brief was mainly defensive.

Riyad Mahrez: 8. Had to work in tight spaces but was unmarked when he got the ball off Bernardo Silva. Wasted several great chances to extend United’s lead in the second half.

Bernardo Silva: 9. Playing as a false 9, he kept the ball well and scored an excellent opener for City then intercepted a poor header from Victor Lindelof to hand Riyad Mahrez his goal too.

Raheem Sterling: 7. Wasted golden chances to wipe the floor with United after crosses by De Bruyne and Mahrez were passed up. But he did put a shift in, attracting United defenders to him.

Gabriel Jesus (on for Kevin De Bruyne, 80): no time to mark

Phil Foden (on for Riyad Mahrez, 87): no time to mark
