Rashford scored his 64th goal for United on his 200th appearance for the Reds as they took the lead in the 27th minute when Juan Mata picked him out with a dinked cross into the box.

It was just what United needed after a soporific start and they duly conjured up shots from Fred and Andreas Pereira as Norwich failed to react in the first half.

Brandon Williams was brought down by Tm Krul after Rashford sent him clean through early in the second half and Rashford duly converted the spot kick to double their lead in the 52nd minute.

And less than 2 minutes later Anthony Martial made it 3-0 to United when he rose to meet Juan Mata’s cross from the right and headed the ball past Krul from 7 yards out.

Brandon Williams could have made his four for United but blazed over from three yards with his right foot in front of a gaping net after Andreas Pereira’s low cross across the box found him in plenty of space.

Substitute Mason Greenwood couldn’t believe his luck as Max Aarons’ headed clearance fell to him. He created space for himself and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner in the 76th minute.
