First away league win of the season for Mossley after triumph at windswept Clitheroe

February 22, 2020 by Tony Bugby

CLITHEROE 1, MOSSLEY 3

Mossley finally got a monkey off their back by securing an elusive first away league win of the season with victory at Clitheroe.

Indeed, it was the first league success on the road since their triumph at Colwyn Bay in April lifting the Lilywhites to seventh place.

It was a long-awaited win on their travels and achieved in blustery conditions through two goals from former Oldham Athletic striker Ryan Brooke and a strike from on-loan Stockport County striker Szymon Czubik.

After previous manager Dave Wild picked up only two points away from home this season, caretaker Andy Keogh has collected four points from his first two games in temporary charge at Dunston and Clitheroe.

Keogh believes not having a manager pitchside has its advantages.

“There is not as much pressure and the players have taken ownership on the pitch,” he said.

Keogh brought in 18-year-old Oldham Athletic trainee Jack Grundy at centre back in place of loanee Keil O’Brien who has been recalled by Trafford.

Mossley, playing into the teeth of a gale, took a 16th minute lead when Keogh released Brooke who rounded goalkeeper Chris Thompson who had raced from his goal and scored from well outside the box.

In a match of precious few chances, Clitheroe equalised with eight minutes left when Grundy failed to reach goalkeeper Liam Lovell with a header as substitute Terry Cummings, who had only been on the pitch seven minutes, slotted the ball low past the keeper.

Mossley, with the wind behind them in the second period, displayed grit and determination to regain the lead four minutes later.

Keogh got to the byline on the left and delivered a cross for Czubik to head home as he stole in at the near post.

And they made absolutely certain of victory in the first of five added minutes.

Substitute Jes Uchegbulam made a jinking run down the left before crossing for Brooke to squeeze home a low shot, his fifth goal of the season.
