Oldham Athletic’s costly late slip as they are held at home by Forest Green Rovers

February 15, 2020 by Tony Bugby

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, FOREST GREEN ROVERS 1

There was further disappointment for Oldham Athletic following a week to forget.

A late goal from Forest Green Rovers substitute George Williams denied Latics what would have been a hard-earned victory after Gevaro Nepomuceno had put them ahead.

It would have dispelled the misery of back to back defeats at Crewe to a 97th minute winner and Exeter City.

And having previously strung together a six-match unbeaten run, Latics are back on the slide to 19th place in Sky Bet League One.

David Wheater was suspended following his sending off at Exeter and goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz lost his place after high-profile blunders while Johan Branger-Engone also missed out on a starting spot.

The players to win recalls were fit-again goalkeeper Gary Woods, Zak Mills and Zak Dearnley.

On a wet and windy afternoon as Boundary Park was battered by Storm Dennis, Latics had their first goal attempt in the opening minute when Nepomuceno fired wide.

Woods prevented the Gloucestershire visitors taking the lead with a smart save to deny James Aitchison who also saw another shot flash narrowly wide.

Latics came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute, Zak Dearnley smashed an effort from outside the box that struck the crossbar and Jonny Smith’s follow-up effort was well saved by Lewis Thomas.

Woods was called into action again in the 42nd minute, his acrobatic stop from Aaron Collins’ effort ensured it remained goalless at the break.

There was a nervy moment for Latics in the first minute of the second half when Jevani Brown shot narrowly over.

Latics took the lead in the 56th minute. Mills’ cross was cleared to Nepomuceno whose shot found its way into the corner of the net, narrowly eluding Thomas.

Christopher Missilou nearly doubled Latics’ lead but his effort was just wide.

Rovers had a chance to restore parity when Liam Kitching headed against the crossbar from Williams’ cross.

They eventually equalised in the 89th minute when Williams found the net with a spectacular drive from distance which gave Woods no chance.

Nepomuceno missed a great chance to win the game deep into stoppage time but he took too much time when trying to take the ball around the keeper and Rovers managed to clear the danger.

Goals: Nepomuceno (56) for Oldham. Williams (89) for Forest Green Rovers.

Oldham Athletic (4-4-2): Woods; Mills, Hamer, Piergianni, Borthwick-Jackson; Nepomuceno, Missilou (Sylla 73), McCann, Smith (Branger-Engone 83); Dearnley (Maouche 66), Rowe. Subs (not used): de la Paz, Wilson, N’Guessan, Dieseruvwe.

Attendance: 2,720 (107 visitors).
