David Fish makes winning return to Chadderton with new-club Mossley

September 2, 2020 by Tony Bugby

CHADDERTON 0, MOSSLEY 3

David Fish made a winning return to Chadderton as Mossley chalked up a fourth straight pre-season victory at Broadway.

Goals from Matty Waller, Ryan Shenton and Jordan Butterworth, as well as a clean sheet, made it a perfect night for the Lilywhites.

If there was any criticism, it was Mossley ought to have won by a wider margin as they missed some glorious chances to build on their 3-0 interval lead.

“I was pleased with the performance and also I didn’t want to come back to my former club and lose,” explained Fish who only moved to Mossley in June.

Fish added: “What I was most satisfied with was the way we managed the game – Chadderton only had one clean sight at goal.

“Chadderton made eight changes at the break – we didn’t make any – so they had fresh legs which could have made a difference but didn’t.

“If we had taken our chances, we could have scored six or seven goals.”

Fish’s only criticism was there were times his side failed to move the ball quickly enough when in possession.

Mossley took the lead in the 18th minute when Waller swept home a Harry Pratt cross with great aplomb.

They doubled their advantage just short of the half hour when Shenton rose at the far post to head home Ben Richardson’s free kick.

And it was job completed when Mossley added a third goal at the end of the opening half.

Dylan Stringer-Moth provided a cross from the right, Pratt sold a dummy and that provided the space for Butterworth to find the net with a low drive.

Mossley ought to have added to their tally in the second period.

Pratt burst clear on the left and fired narrowly wide, Waller’s scintillating run set up Stringer-Moth who dragged a shot past the upright before Pratt was denied by a fabulous reflex save from second-half goalkeeper Harry Fleet.

The 17-year-old Fleet made another decent stop to keep out Steve Mason’s header while with almost the last kick of the match Pratt, free at the far post, volleyed over Richardson’s corner from three yards when he looked as though he could not miss.
