Oldham Athletic win at leaders Newport County as they have best away record in League Two

December 19, 2020 by Tony Bugby

NEWPORT COUNTY 2, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 4

What a pity Oldham Athletic don’t play away every match as they would be top of Sky Bet League Two.

Latics’ sixth win from nine league matches puts them at the top of the away form table.

And of those successes, the latest victory at leaders Newport County was the most impressive as they twice came from behind as they displayed grit and resilience to equal a club record of seven straight away league wins.

Goals from Davis Keillor-Dunn, Conor McAleny and from substitutes Alfie McCalmont and Zak Dearnley inflicted the Exiles’ first home defeat of the season, another statistic which underlined what a magnificent win it was.

The only thing head coach Harry Kewell needs to address is their form at Boundary Park where they have won only twice in 10 attempts are at fourth bottom of the home table.

Kewell made two changes from the team that was beaten at home by Walsall four days earlier as Sido Jombati and Keillor-Dunn replaced Dylan Fage and McCalmont.

Newport took an eighth-minute lead with a fine strike from the dangerous Scott Twine who found the net with an unstoppable drive from distance.

But Latics were only behind for six minutes, Keillor-Dunn sliding a shot home after Harry Clarke’s pass was flicked on by Jombati.

McAleny should have made more with an angled effort after a quick break while Dylan Bahamboula also created a good chance for Bobby Grant.

It was against the run of play that the home side regained the lead five minutes before the interval, Scot Bennett was given too much space as he turned and fired a low shot past Ian Lawlor.

But more drama was about to follow in the second period, beginning with a fabulous individual effort from McAleny to draw Latics level again just before the hour.

As the ball bounced 30 yards from goal, the attacker struck a sweet strike past goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

For the second away game running, Kewell’s side also had Lawlor to thank for a game-changing penalty save, this time keeping out Padrig Amond’s penalty after 71 minutes.

It gave Latics the impetus to stage a grandstand finish with two goals from substitutes to seal the points in style.

With five minutes to play, McCalmont steered the ball home at the far post after good work from Bahamboula.

And moments after seeing his header hit the bar, Dearnley wrapped it up with another long-range strike, receiving the ball from Keillor-Dunn before rifling it home to secure fantastic win.

And Keillor-Dunn’s strike made it a 12th league goal scored between the 76th and 90th minutes, the most netted by any of the 92 league clubs in this time span.

Oldham Athletic: Lawlor, Jombati, Clarke, Piergianni, Borthwick-Jackson (Barnett 46), Ntambwe, Garrity, Bahamboula (Hamer 88), Keillor-Dunn, McAleny (McCalmont 74), Grant (Dearnley 74). Subs (not used): Bilboe, Fage, Whelan.

Goals: Twine, 8, Bennett, 41, for Newport. Keillor-Dunn, 14, McAleny, 58, McCalmont, 85, Dearnley, 90+3, for Oldham.
