The Reds had played for nearly an hour with ten men after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had been sent off and had looked set to leave Switzerland with a point.

Things had appeared to be going according to plan when Cristiano Ronaldo was picked out with a brilliant cross from the left by Portugal team mate Bruno Fernandes in the 13th minute.

Ronaldo’s finish was his third strike in two appearances since he re-signed from Juventus – and his 135th goal in the Champions League.

But the home side, managed by ex-Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner, showed plenty of adventure and refused to give up.

The warning signs were there for the Reds as the struggled to create chances before Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for a dangerous foul on Christopher Martins after 35 minutes.

Jadon Sancho was sacrificed for Diogo Dalot after another lacklustre display as United knew they had to battle to hold on to the lead.

Christian Fassnacht slashed a golden chance to equalise wide of the far post while Meschak Elia proved to be a handful for the United defence prompting Reds manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer onto the back foot.

Donnie van de Beek was next to be hauled off with Raphael Varane going into a back five at the break but the energetic Swiss side, egged on by Wagner and a vocal Swiss crowd, peppered the Reds with shots.

Moumi Ngameleu’s 66th minute equaliser was the least that Young Boys deserved as they went on to finish with 19 shots on goal to United’s 2.

But they got an even better reward for their adventure as Wagner sensed another shock and urged his side to keep going with more attacking subs.

David De Gea had to tip away Sandro Lauper’s long range shot but United thought they had managed to hang on until seconds before the end before Jesse Lingard, on for Ronaldo, sold De Gea short with a back pass that Siebatcheu stabbed home for a stunning win.
