Lodi, who was man of the match in the first leg, scored the goal that took Atleti through to the quarter finals of the Champions League at the expense of the Reds.

More than one United player was caught ball watching as Joao Felix back heeled the ball to Antoine Griezmann whose cross picked out Lodi unmarked at the back post.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who did not even have a single shot in the game for only the third time in his Champions League career, looked a shadow of the titan who blew away Spurs on Saturday and the Reds could not hold on to the ball against Atleti who made the most of their ball time.

United were wasteful when in the ascendancy in the first half, wasting several good chances, and were then blunted by a fully expected Atletico defensive performance in the second half as they failed to find an equaliser against the highly organised Spanish Champions.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 0, Atletico Madrid 1 (Atletico Madrid win 2-1 on aggregate, UEFA Champions League Round of 16)

David De Gea: 6. Great save from Rodrigo de Paul. Grateful that Marcos Llorente was offside in the buildup to a first half goal by Joao Felix that was ruled out. The former Atleti goalkeeper was booed after full time by the Atletico fans as he came up to the press box.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Almost created an early goal with a ball into the box, not afraid of a shot either. Much more mobile and fearless up against Renan Lodi but couldn’t cut out the cross for the opening goal by the winger after being outnumbered in defence.

Raphael Varane: 6. Good touches in defence. Almost scored an equaliser with a second half header.

Harry Maguire: 6. Battled with Reinildo on set pieces but looked jittery when pressed hard, something Atletico did well in the second half.

Alex Telles: 6. Attacking outlook but ball watching when Joao Felix started the move that ended in Renan Lodi’s goal.

Scott McTominay: 6. Did well sweeping up at the base of midfield but too little dynamism.

Fred: 7. Showed some skill in advanced positions again. Unlucky to be taken off.

Anthony Elanga: 6. Clattered Jan Oblak as he tried to meet a ball into the area by Diogo Dalot. Used his face to get on the end of a Bruno Fernandes cross and hit Oblak’s face with his shot. Quick feet going forward and almost scored in the second half. Gave Lodi something to think about but failed to track him for his first half goal – a fatal mistake.

Bruno Fernandes: 6. Flashes of brilliance, tried to win a penalty early on and almost levelled the scores just before half time with a swerving shot. Taken off just when United need inspiration but the Reds were losing the ball too often.

Jadon Sancho: 6. Provided a good outlet on the left but aside from some well timed runs wasn’t dangerous enough in front of goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 6. Started deep and wide which worried the Atletico midfielders but was nowhere near his Tottenham best from Saturday. Did not trouble Jan Oblak.

Nemanja Matic (on for Scott McTominay, 67): 6. Couldn’t stop Atletico’s passing game.

Marcus Rashford (on for Anthony Elanga, 67): 6. Still short of confidence.

Paul Pogba (on for Bruno Fernandes, 67): 6. Did nothing of note.

Edinson Cavani (on for Fred, 75): 5. Added extra work rate up front but touch was poor.

Juan Mata (on for Harry Maguire, 84): No time to mark.
