Injury-time heartbreak for Oldham Athletic for second successive week after last-gasp loss at Swindon Town

John Sheridan’s honeymoon as Oldham Athletic’s new head coach is over following back-to-back defeats.

After being unbeaten in his first seven games, Sheridan’s side has now lost successive matches against Carlisle United and Swindon Town.

And after briefly climbing out of the bottom two relegation places, Latics are back in trouble and three points adrift from a position of safety.

For the second successive week there was late heartbreak for Latics as they were undone by an injury-time goal.

Morgan Feeney’s 94th minute effort gave Carlisle maximum points and at Swindon Town it was a case of an even later show as Dion Conroy struck the decisive blow in the sixth minute of added time.

It came minutes after Latics had Jordan Clarke sent off for a second yellow card.

Although Latics had to fend off heavy pressure from their play-off chasing opponents, they thought they were worth a share of the spoils.

Sheridan named an unchanged line-up from the team that lost against Carlisle and Latics started on the front foot carving out two glorious chances inside the opening three minutes.

Carl Piergianni was unable to direct a header past goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott having been set up by Nicky Adams and Clarke.

And within 60 seconds, Dylan Bahamboula was unable to make the most of a chance as he shot over.

Further chances would follow, Christopher Missilou narrowly clearing the crossbar after good play from Bahamboula and Sam Hart who supplied the pass.

Bahamboula was heavily involved in the early stages, teeing up David Keillor-Dunn, whose effort was held by Wollacott but the home side then started to get a foothold in the game.

Piergianni was required to make the first of several last-ditch blocks to deny Ricky Aguiar, who was also denied by Danny Rogers.

Bahamboula also led Latics’ charge at the start of the second period, shooting over from 30 yards after latching onto a loose ball before displaying excellent footwork as he broke into the area, electing to square to Adams rather than shoot, but he was unable to find the pass.

Latics found themselves increasingly on the back foot. Ellis Landolo shot over and substitute Jonny Williams sent an effort into the side netting.

Hart produced a last-ditch challenge to deny Louis Reed before a brilliant reaction save from Rogers kept out Williams, but there was nothing the goalkeeper could do to prevent Conroy in stoppage time.

Oldham Athletic: Rogers, Clark, Hart, McGahey (Fage 46), Piergianni, Adams, Whelan, Hope (Stobbs 87), Keillor-Dunn, Bahamboula, Missilou. Subs (not used): Leutwiler, Hunt, Hopcutt, Couto, Vaughan.

Goal: Dion Conroy (90+2) for Swindon Town.

Attendance: 11,390 (280 visitors).
