PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 4, Aston Villa 2 (Carabao Cup 3rd Round)

Martin Dubravka: 6. Little to do in the first half, then all of a sudden a very busy man.

Diogo Dalot: 5. Looked a bit overplayed. Played high up the pitch, which denied United extra protection for Harry Maguire. Own goal to put United under pressure.

Harry Maguire: 6. Shaky start but started clearing half chances for Villa. Had a great chance to win it with a late header saved by Robin Olsen before his team mates turned up the pressure and overran Villa.

Victor Lindelof: 6. Got hurt in the first half. Didn’t play risky football after that.

Tyrell Malacia: 7. Couple of early chances well defended. Caught upfield at crucial moments for Villa’s goals but made up for it by launching long balls forward to start the moves for United’s goals.

Scott McTominay: 8. Deepest lying midfielder, lacking chance to create something further up but cleared a corner by Douglas Luiz. Hit the crossbar late on and then stabbed in United’s fourth in injury time to make the game safe after meeting Alejandro Garnacho’s cross.

Fred: 6. Aimless and sacrificed in the second half.

Donny van de Beek: 6. Played as a number 10 again and although better than previous games he didn’t add much for United.

Bruno Fernandes: 8. Out of position wide on the right but tried some tricks to create chances but identified as a threat and nullified. Couple of free kicks raised the temperature a little and then set up United’s first equaliser. Had plenty of shots later in the game and a late free kick tipped over the bar.

Marcus Rashford: 8. Wasteful and somehow missed some good chances until he leaped over Tyrone Mings after he slipped and hit United’s second equaliser.

Anthony Martial: 6. Didn’t look interested until he scored a quick fire equaliser. Taken off in the second half.

Alejandro Garnacho (on for Anthony Martial, 62): 8. The crowd got on their feet every time he went on a run with the ball down the left flank – made two goals as well. No goals but just as important to Old Trafford fans as any of the goalscorer tonight.

Christian Eriksen (on for Fred, 62): 7. Some good touches in dangerous areas.

Anthony Elanga (on for Donny van de Beek, 62): 6. His wing partner shone in the spotlight tonight.

Casemiro (on for Marcus Rashford, 82): No time to mark.

Lisandro Martinez (on for Victor Lindelof, 87): No time to mark
