Manchester United 3, Charlton Athletic 0 – Carabao Cup Quarter Final – Player Ratings

January 10, 2023 by Paul Chan

Manchester United 3, Charlton Athletic 0 (Carabao Cup Quarter Final)

A brace by Marcus Rashford after the 90th minute after Antony scored early ensured Manchester United beat Charlton who fought till the end.

United had to bring on the big guns – Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Rashford – in the second half to make sure of the result as Charlton fought well but without really threatening the United goal.

Fred had earlier hit the woodwork and Anthony Elanga had a goal ruled out for offside but the Reds will be worried about an injury to Diogo Dalot that saw the full back limp off injured in the first half with the Manchester derby coming on Saturday.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 3, Charlton Athletic 0 (Carabao Cup Quarter Final)

Tom Heaton: 7. Early save from Steven Sessegnon. Saw some action as he bundled into Sean Clare too. Went for and got a rare ball in the air for Miles Leaburn late on and saved from Scott Fraser’s free kick.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Wayward early on and then went down injured. Replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Harry Maguire: 7. Encouraging at centre back with some timely clearances and relished a battle with Miles Leaburn.

Lisandro Martinez: 7. First start since the World Cup. Dwarfed but not cowed by Miles Leaburn and looked bright and got stuck in.

Tyrell Malacia: 6. Raided forward well.

Scott McTominay: 6. Quiet game in midfield, looked short of match practice.

Fred: 7. Advanced role. Had a shot bravely blocked by Ryan Inniss and then laid on United’s opening goal before hitting the inside of the post with a great 30 yard free kick.

Antony: 7. Scored another goal with a sweet left footed curling effort from 20 yards. Had a great battle with Steven Sessegnon and saw a long range shot go wide in the second half.

Kobbie Mainoo: 6. Debut in central midfield – didn’t see much of the ball. Gave away a dangerous free kick 25 yards out for Charlton.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6. Exciting start for the youngster who carved out three early chances – and he broke free towards the end but his shot was saved by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Anthony Elanga: 6. Played at centre forward. Had a shot blocked and was way offside after scoring in the second half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (on for Diogo Dalot, 34): 6. Unexpected entrant onto the pitch, booed on by the Charlton fans for his Crystal Palace connections. Good cross from the right finished by Anthony Elanga but Elanga had gone too early.

Casemiro (on for Kobbie Mainoo, 60): 8. Shored up things for United and tried a ludicrous shot from 40 yards – which went wide. Two great passes from midfield made sure of the win at the end.

Marcus Rashford (on for Antony, 60): 8. Went to centre forward with Anthony Elanga going to right wing as United reshuffled.

Christian Eriksen (on for Fred, 60): 7. Gave United’s midfield a bit more class and could have scored but for a great save by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Facundo Pellistri (on for Anthony Elanga 84): Debut, too late to mark but still managed an assist in a matter of minutes and looked more composed for a young player.
