PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 0, Southampton 0

David De Gea: 7. Early saves from Kyle Walker-Peters twice from Theo Walcott – point blank header and a 1 to 1 effort. And was saved by the post when Walker-Peters drive came off the woodwork beyond his reach.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7. Gave United defensive assurance down the right flank. Cleared a wayward deflection off Scott McTominay off the line in the second half.

Raphael Varane: 7. Had plenty to keep him occupied, also saw his close range shot blocked by Gavin Bazunu.

Lisandro Martinez: 7. On early disciplinary tightrope after a booking but gave a good account of himself afterwards.

Luke Shaw: 7. Not much call to attack after the red card but had a shot blocked by Kyle Walker-Peters, comfortable at the back and good passing when he did venture forward.

Casemiro: 5. Poor distribution early on and then sent off after 36 minutes following a VAR check for a nasty foul on Carlos Alcaraz.

Bruno Fernandes: 7. Deeper role. Off target with some early chances, taunted mercilessly by the Southampton fans every time he protested to the referee. Had a second half shot tipped against the post and out by Gavin Bazunu.

Antony: 6. Little bit wasteful on the ball. Tried to comfort Casemiro after he looked distraught following the red card.

Wout Weghorst: 6. Did his usual high pressing game. Unexpectedly got on the end of a cross into the box and headed straight to Gavin Bazunu. Sacrificed for Scott McTominay after the Casemiro sending off.

Jadon Sancho: 6. Quiet game for the England man who faded quickly up against Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse.

Marcus Rashford: 6. Two early attempts lacked his usual verve and never really threatened afterwards.

Scott McTominay (on for Wout Weghorst, 44): 6. Lucky not to score an own goal after Kyle Walker-Peters’ cutback came off him and almost ricocheted into the goal.

Alejandro Garnacho (on for Jadon Sancho, 74): 6. Taken out by a well timed challenge by Kyle Walker-Peters, injured in the aftermath.

Fecundo Pellistri (on for Antony, 74): 6. Didn’t really affect the game.

Harry Maguire (on for Lisandro Martinez, 90): No time to mark

Fred (on for Alejandro Garnacho, 90): no time to mark.
