Scott McTominay opened the scoring in the 37 minutes after United had peppered the Everton goal with shots in the first half but found Jordan Pickford in no mood to concede.

A big punt upfield by Lisandro Martinez was fumbled by Seamus Coleman and Marcus Rashford got to the loose ball first and squared it for substitute Anthony Martial to double United’s lead over shot-shy Everton after 71 minutes.

The game might have looked safe but Rashford limped off ten minutes from the end with what looked like a groin injury although there were loud cheers for the return of Christian Eriksen from a long injury layoff.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 2, Everton 0

David De Gea: 6. Only one shot to save and it was right at him.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7. Bad miss when he was first to the rebound when Antony hit the post, also had a shot deflected over the bar. Little got past him though.

Harry Maguire: 7. Big clearance set up Marcus Rashford 1 on 1 with Jordan Pickford. Lucky to escape a penalty claim when tackling Demarai Gray.

Lisandro Martinez: 7. Had shots of his own as United struggled to break down Everton – up for the battle against the big Everton striker Ellis Simms. His big punt upfield created United’s second goal.

Tyrell Malacia: 7. Clattered early on. Didn’t have much in the way of danger from Everton so got forward a bit too.

Scott McTominay: 7. Worked hard to create chances for United but had one of his own and rifled it home. Had a little kick at Seamus Coleman as things got frustrating in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes: 6. Had a shot saved by Jordan Pickford and skied another, had a header saved in the second half. Got a bit desperate for a goal towards the end and went for goal when a pass was on.

Antony: 6. Hit the back post with a shot following Bruno Fernandes corner. Little bit greedy to the detriment of the team.

Sabitzer: 7. Good going forward, had an early shot go wide and another saved by Jordan Pickford before blazing a close range effort over.

Jadon Sancho: 7. Created a couple of early chances and saw an early shot go wide, left two Everton players on their backside while creating. Laid on the goal for Scott McTominay. Switched to the right after the introduction of Anthony Martial.

Marcus Rashford: 6. Plenty of hard yards but didn’t get much change from Everton’s hardy defence – constantly thwarted by Pickford – so went roaming but the ball did go for him – he was switched to the left side after Anthony Martial came on and squared the ball to him for United’s second but came off with a groin injury late on.

Anthony Martial (on for Antony, 60): 7. Scored United’s second after a big mistake by Seamus Coleman allowed Marcus Rashford to get the loose ball to him.

Fred (on for Marcel Sabitzer): No time to mark.

Christian Eriksen (on for Jadon Sancho, 76): Popular return for the Dane. No time to mark.

Wout Weghorst (on for Marcus Rashford, 81): Marcus Rashford pulled up with a groin injury and limped off. No time to mark.
