Veteran striker Mauro Icardi scored the winner after earlier missing a penalty conceded by Casemiro was who sent off after a second bookable offence.

United had earlier taken the lead though a predatory strike by Rasmus Hojlund who scored his first goal at Old Trafford with a header supplied by Marcus Rashford.

But sloppy defending allowed Galatasaray to equalise through ex-United player Wilf Zaha after he beat Diogo Dalot to a long ball from ex-Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez.

United retook the lead after a slip by Sanchez allowed Hojlund a clear run on goal from his own half with a cool finish lifted over Fernando Muslera.

Baris Yilmaz went clear and passed the ball for livelier attacker Kemel Akturkoglu to finish cleanly past Andre Onana.

And with the game on a knife edge Casemiro was forced to foul Dries Mertens as he went past him with 13 minutes to go. It was a second yellow card for the Brazilian who had to go.

Mauro Icardi stepped up for the penalty but stuck it wide of the upright to the dismay of Galatasaray fans.

But United could not adapt to the loss of Casemiro and Sanchez’ powerful clearing header from defence took out three static United defenders and allowed Icardi to atone for his error with a stylish goal that handed the visitors a first win at Old Trafford.
