Manchester United took an early lead through a penalty by Katie Zelem after 21 minutes following a handball by Alex Greenwood but City hit back twice in 80 seconds through goals by Jill Roord with a 15 yard rocket and Lauren Hemp who crashed a shot off the crossbar.

City were dominant and in the second half extended their lead when Maya Le Tessier’s under-hit backpass had to be desperately cleared by Mary Earps but Khadija Shaw was at hand to charge the ball down and it rolled into the back of the United net to the delight of the visiting fans.

City went down to 10 players after Laia Aleixandri was sent off for a needless second bookable offence but they closed ranks and held off the dangerous United to win a massive derby for the first time at Old Trafford.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United Women 1, Manchester City Women 3

MAN UTD WOMEN

Mary Earps: 7. Couple of great first half saves to keep United in the game but could do little with the City goals. Massively unlucky to be short-changed from a Maya Le Tissier backpass which allowed City to get further ahead.

Hannah Blundell: 6. Torrid time against Chloe Kelly

Millie Turner: 6. Hard time looking after the elusive Bunny Shaw.

Maya Le Tissier: 5. Poor back pass exposed Mary Earps and allowed Bunny Shaw to close her down and score.

Leah Galton: 6. Out of position. Ineffective.

Lisa Naalsund: 6. Overrun in midfield.

Katie Zelem: 6. Cool as you like with the penalty.

Melvine Malard: 6. Won the penalty that got United off to a good start. But lost a bit of discipline and was taken off in the second half.

Ella Toone: 6. Played in an advanced role.

Nikita Parris: 6. Complained about offside decision, isolated. Replaced at half time.

Geyse: 7. Caused City problems and had a goal ruled out after it was adjudged to have gone out of play before she scored from the acutest of angles. Lacked people to finish off chances.

Jade Riviere (on for Nikita Parris, 46): 6. Not much chance to attack City but at least forced a save out of Khiara Keating in injury time.

Lucia Garcia (on for Melvine Malard, 69): 7. Strong running drew a foul from Laia Aleixandri which earned the City defender a second yellow card). Tried to catch out Khiara Keating but the City keeper was equal to her long range effort.

Hinate Miyazawa (on for Ella Toone, 77): No time to mark.

Rachel Williams (on for Lisa Naalsund, 77): No time to mark.

MAN CITY WOMEN

Khiara Keating: 7. Almost saved the penalty after getting a hand to it, good handling and confidently saved a few chances by United.

Laia Aleixandri: 5. Tough tackling presence but was sent off for an unnecessary second yellow card.

Alanna Kennedy: 7. Had an early chance but was also present in defence.

Alex Greenwood: 6. Back from concussion. Culpable for handball that gave away the penalty.

Leila Ouhabi: 7. Steady game in defence. Kept both Nikita Parris and

Filippa Angeldahl: 7. Good link play in midfield.

Yui Hasegawa: 7. Played the quarterback role well.

Chloe Kelly: 7. Marvellous movement and set up the opening goal before having a shot of her own saved by Mary Earps while clean through.

Jill Roord: 8. Unstoppable goal and plenty of midfield guile.

Lauren Hemp: 8. Great goal – top bins in off the crossbar and troubled the United defence.

Khadija Shaw: 8. Had great chances to score but turned provider for Lauren Hemp. Brought down by Melvine Malard in the second half and scored a fortuitous goal after she charged down a clearance by Mary Earps. Had several bouts of on pitch treatment which earned her the role of pantomime villain for Old Trafford.

Kerstin Casparij (on for Bunny Shaw, 75): 6. On to steady the ship.

Steph Houghton (on for Yui Hasegawa, 83): No time to mark

Laura Coombs (on for Chloe Kelly, 83): No time to mark.

Mary Fowler (on for Lauren Hemp, 90): No time to mark.
