It was the first time that City had come from behind to beat United in a Premier League match at the 29th time of trying.

United overturned the odds after just 8 minutes of the derby after the Reds capitalised on a direct ball to take City by surprise when Rashford cannoned the ball off the crossbar.

But City held their nerve, slowly took control of the game, and Phil Foden’s brace put City back in the lead by the 80th minute before Erling Haaland made sure of the win in injury time.

Haaland had earlier missed an open goal in the first half but City stayed calm and, with Rodri earning a record 59th game unbeaten in all competitions in the Premier League era, the big Norwegian scored after Sofyan Amrabat gave the ball away in injury time.

City remain a point behind league leaders Liverpool ahead of their showdown at Anfield next weekend while United remain sixth but are now 11 points behind Aston Villa in 4th place.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 3, Manchester United 1

Manchester City

Ederson: 6. Caught by surprise for the Rashford goal. Had hardly anything to worry about for most of the game from midway through the first half.

Kyle Walker: 7. Early pass showed that he can get involved. His recovery pace was vital for covering a slip by Ruben Dias. Ambitious second half shot saved by Andre Onana. And he got back to prevent Marcus Rashford to have a shooting chance.

John Stones: 6. Closely watched by Bruno Fernandes as United identified him as a danger. Went down in the United area early on but no penalty given.

Ruben Dias: 6. Slip at critical moment went unpunished but still a defensive stalwart.

Nathan Ake: 7. Able to tidy up sloppy balls forward on his side. Put some good crosses in during second half.

Rodri: 8. Found his options limited by the packed United midfield. Still have space to try a few long range efforts. Patience paid off as United could not keep up the intensity and City took control – laid off the ball to Phil Foden for his equaliser.

Kevin De Bruyne: 7. Put lots of balls in but United were just about able to pick them off. Shooting radar off today but still had people out of their seats with an injury time effort that whistled wide.

Phil Foden: 9. Nominally a right winger but came inside. Had a couple of early shots but a great chance denied by Raphael Varane. Crossing could have been better but you couldn’t argue with his clutch goals. Switched to the left late in the game.

Bernardo Silva: 8. Sitting deeper in midfield but created chances whenever he came up. Went wide left after Jeremy Doku departed and became even more influential.

Jeremy Doku: 6. Constant worry for United defence but wasteful in possession when trying difficult balls or shots. Carved out a good chance in the second half but was an easy first substitution for Pep Guardiola.

Erling Haaland: 7. Isolated up front and marshalled by Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans. Headed over some prime chances in the first half including an excellent one served up by Phil Foden in front of an open goal. Got the goal he deserved in added time.

Julian Alvarez (on for Jeremy Doku, 59): 7. Not great at ball retention in midfield but he did exchange passes with Phil Foden for his second goal and added energy to midfield.

Oscar Bobb (on for Phil Foden, 90+7): No time to mark

Manchester United

Andre Onana: 7. Launched a big kick upfield to start the move that ended with the opening goal. Saw plenty of action and crucially saved from Phil Foden but he couldn’t save Foden’s curling effort in the second half.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Patient and tough defending against Jeremy Doku, waited for him to waste the ball.

Raphael Varane: 6. Playing his third game in a week. Great block to stop a shot by Phil Foden. Almost diverted the ball past Onana as City attacked repeatedly. Last ditch tackle prevented a Foden hat trick.

Jonny Evans: 6. Decent in the air for City’s aerial attacks and helped Raphael Varane close mark Erling Haaland in the first half.

Victor Lindelof: 6. Looked after Phil Foden whenever he came close to the United left flank but couldn’t prevent the equaliser.

Kobbie Mainoo: 6. Got his boot in for midfield battles and made a good defensive pairing with Casemiro in front of the defence.

Casemiro: 7. Back to his marauding best with plenty of help around him in the first half. Got the ball off John Stones early on, preventing early penalty and mopped up in front of the defence. Like other United players he faded in the second half, allowing Foden to score his second goal.

Scott McTominay: 6. Pressed up from an advanced midfield role but faded.

Bruno Fernandes: 7. Employed as false 9. Did his hold up work well and laid on the opening goal. Got around the pitch to help out.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6. Deployed on right wing but had few chances to stretch his legs.

Marcus Rashford: 6. Stayed on left wing rather than up front but when the chance came he took it with both hands and smashed in a glorious opener off the crossbar. Almost had a second chance but Kyle Walker got back to deny him a free run on goal. Made a mess of a third chance, failing to wrap his foot around the ball. Lack of pressing a problem after his casual approach to tracking back after failing to get a foul in the build up to City’s goal. Looked to have aggravated an injury in the first half.

Willy Kambwala (on for Jonny Evans, 69): 6. Showed his inexperience after being trusted to come on.

Antony (on for Marcus Rashford, 75): 6. Ineffective.

Omari Forson (on for Alejandro Garnacho, 82): No time to mark

Sofyan Amrabat (on for Kobbie Mainoo, 82): No time to mark
