Ashton United beat Workington to remain unbeaten in Northern Premier League, Premier

August 24, 2024 by Tony Bugby

ASHTON UNITED 3, WORKINGTON 0

A first goal for the club in added time at the end of the first period saw summer signing Louis White put Ashton United on the way to maintaining their unbeaten start to the season in Pitching In Northern Premier League, Premier, at home to Workington.

Nathan Lowe’s high cross to the far post was volleyed home by the midfielder who had almost opened the scoring three minutes earlier as he sent a 25-yard rocket against the crossbar.

The visitors thought they had moved ahead as early as the fifth minute as Jamie Allen hit the bar from Steven Rigg’s pass with the ball adjudged not to have crossed the line.

Just afterwards, Sean Newton sent in an effort from distance which went narrowly wide and Josh Galloway’s free kick won a corner off Lowe which saw a snapshot by Kai Nugent just tipped over by keeper Corey O’Keefe.

Nugent then saw his corner almost turned home by Rigg and James Hardy just failed to take Bobby Bjork’s pass in his stride in the area. Just before the opener, an uncharacteristic error from Sam Baird saw him need to recover in time to rob Kaedyn Kamara with O’Keefe blocking the follow up attempt.

Two minutes into the second half, Lowe’s free kick was helped past the far post by Dan Cowan and midway through the half Hardy’s overlapping cross won a corner which saw Dan Cowan’s header kicked off the line and the right back went on to hit the post from Benny Couto’s corner.

With 17 minutes remaining, Luke Burke won the ball in midfield and slid Darius Osei into the area who placed his shot wide.

Two minutes later, Rigg missed a decent chance for Workington as he volleyed Kai Nugent’s pullback well wide.

Immediately Ashton doubled their advantage as Jak McCourt’s high ball was knocked down by Tom Denton for Osei’s determination to allow him to poke home the second.

Entering added time, Cowan’s overlapping cross gave substitute Denton an unmissable chance to notch his first goal and make the points safe and moved the Robins up to fourth place in the table.

Ashton United: O’Keefe, Cowan, Doherty, Newton, Burke, Baird, Lowe (McCourt 77), White, Hardy (Couto 68), Osei (Massey 80), Bjork (Denton 68). Subs (unused): Johnson.

Attendance: 317.
