United had been second best to PAOK in a first half of few clear chances but Andrija Zivkovic and Mady Camara could have put the visitors into the lead.

Instead the Reds too the lead soon after the restart when Amad Diallo stretched to reach a cross by Bruno Fernandes and his looping header dropped inside the back post to break the deadlock after 50 minutes.

And he had a second shot saved by Dominik Kotarski 9 minutes later as United tried to double their lead.

But he did earn his second goal as he made the game safe with a goal made from his own work rate after he robbed Abdul Rahman Baba and his 20 yard shot beat Domink Kotarski via a slight deflection to make it 2-0.

There was time for applause as former United player Shola Shoretire was introduced 6 minutes from the end.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 2, PAOK 0 (Europa League)

Andre Onana: 7. Good save from an Andrija Zivkovic that was moving in the air and flying save to deny Mady Camara from 18 yards. Second half save from Tarik Tissoudali ensured the clean sheet.

Noussair Mazraoui: 7. Few chances to get forward, stayed back to help defence until later in the game when United had the lead.

Victor Lindelof: 7. No surprises for him at the back.

Johnny Evans: 7. Plenty of experience to keep things solid at the back.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Inverted into a more attacking position from left back.

Casemiro: 7. Got back to block a shot from Mady Camara, great cross to try and find Alejandro Garnacho. Tried to buy a comical penalty.

Manuel Ugarte: 6. Booked for cynical challenge on Taison. Taken off soon afterwards.

Amad Diallo: 9. Came through tough examination on the right side for United, some youthful inexperience had cost him chances. Made a hash of dummy cut back just before half time but his header broke the deadlock and he went close again before robbing Baba and scoring the chance himself from outside the area. Went down shortly afterwards and was replaced by Mason Mount.

Bruno Fernandes: 8. Sat deeper but still tried to pull the strings. Great cross field ball to Amad Diallo to break the deadlock.

Alejandro Garnacho: 7. Could have done better with the chances he got. Put a teasing cross in for Amad which was cleared.

Rasmus Hojlund: 6. Early chance to break the deadlock not taken. Night summed up when he fired wide after breaking free to get on a through ball only for the assistant referee to flag him offside anyway. Replaced soon afterwards by Joshua Zirkzee.

Lisandro Martinez (on for Diago Dalot, 65): 6. Slotted in at left back without drama.

Christian Eriksen (on for Manuel Ugarte, 65): 6. Sat deep in midfield but PAOK by that time posed little threat.

Marcus Rashford (on for Alejandro Garnacho, 65): 6. No effect on the game. Shot wide in injury time.

Mason Mount (on for Amad Diallo, 82): No time to mark.

Joshua Zirkzee (on for Rasmus Hojlund, 90): No time to mark.
