After a stunning first half performance by Saints they were 1-0 up at half time after an own goal by Manuel Ugarte but in truth the Reds had been given the run around by Mateus Fernades, Tyler Dibling, and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

United toiled for much of the second half, only earning their equaliser after 82 minutes when Amad Diallo finished off the loose ball after Kyle Walker-Peters had initially blocked him.

In the 90th minute Diallo put the Reds into the lead after volleying home a lofted return pass by Christian Eriksen.

And 4 minutes into added time he pounced on a mistake by Taylor Harwood-Bellis to complete his hat trick after the Saints man failed to control a pass from Aaron Ramsdale, allowing the Ivorian to complete his hat trick after picking his spot.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 3, Southampton 1

Andre Onana: 8. Saved from Kamaldeen Sulemana and Matheus Fernandes. And a double save from Tyler Dibling and Matheus Fernandes as he kept the Reds in the game.

Leny Yoro: 4. Got turned over by Kamaldeen Sulemana more than once and the Ghanaian should have had at least one goal from it.

Mathijs De Ligt: 5. Matheus Fernandes had his number and had a hard tome covering the movement of Sulemana.

Lisandro Martinez: 5. Dribbled past by Tyler Dibling and Sulemana.

Amad: 8. Initially posed a threat but little end product and was beaten all ends up by Kamaldeen Sulemana early in the second half but he held on and scored twice to turn the game around in the last 8 minutes before completing his hat trick in added time to punish the Saints.

Manuel Ugarte: 5. Looked leggy. Not offered much against Joe Aribo and showed his back to Tyler Dibling – his flick on for Mateus Fernandes’ corner flew in off the luckless midfielder. Replaced by Toby Collyer early in the second half.

Kobbie Mainoo: 5. Looked off the pace after bright start. Sacrificed at half time.

Noussair Mazraoui: 5. Had a hard time up against Tyler Dibling on his wrong side.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6. Contrived to miss an easy chance to open the scoring after 20 minutes, shooting wide after Rasmus Hojlund had set him up. Ran into traffic trying to create another chance later to compensate. Produced a superb cross that deserved a better finish than Antony gave it in the second half. Shot straight at Ramsdale as United upped the pressure in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes: 5. Hollywood shots were never going to challenge Aaron Ramsdale.

Rasmus Hojlund: 5. Not very effective at all, subbed off early in the second half.

Antony (on for Kobbie Mainoo, 46): 5. Not much expected from him but he won a corner but then contrived to scuff Alejandro Garnacho’s cross into the grateful arms of Aaron Ramsdale after he was set up by Alejandro Garnacho – mistimed slide meant the ball bounced off his knee.

Joshua Zirkzee (on for Rasmus Hojlund, 53): 5. Could not create space to take a shot. Lack of pace betrayed him during an opening for United. Started the move that ended with the Amad equaliser.

Toby Collyer (on for Manuel Ugarte, 53): 6. Anchoring midfield alone at times as Bruno Fernandes went walkabout from a deeper role after the United reshuffle looking for the ball.

Harry Maguire (on for Leny Yoro, 83): No time to mark.

Christian Eriksen (on for Noussair Mazraoui, 83): No time to mark.
