Mikel Oyarzabal had nudged the Spanish into an aggregate lead from the penalty spot after just 10 minutes before Fernandes struck two spot kicks of his own to swing the lead back to the Reds.

The tie turned with the sending off of substitute Jon Aramburu shortly after he came on – in the 63rd minute for a foul on Patric Dorgu as he broke free on the left.

Fernandes then completed his hat trick with a late far post finish before Diogo Dalot rifled into the roof of the net in added time to put the finishing touches on Ruben Amorim’s best game as United manager so far.

PLAYER RATINGS – Man Utd 4, Real Sociedad 1 (Europa League – Man Utd Win 5-2 on Aggregate)

Andre Onana: 6. Went wrong way for the Mikel Oyarzabal penalty. Saved a long range shot from Sheraldo Becker.

Noussair Mazraoui: 6. Kept his side quiet.

Mathijs De Ligt: 6. Clumsy challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal to give away the penalty.

Ayden Heaven: 6. Shaky start but got into it. Struggled when Kubo came inside.

Diogo Dalot: 7. Not much went down his side. Scored a fine fourth for United to put the icing on a great win.

Casemiro: 8. Good passing from midfield, set up the move that brought United’s equaliser and made second half block to prevent a ball going into the box from Real Sociedad.

Bruno Fernandes: 9. Cross into the box was perfect for Rasmus Hojlund – he took the spot kick well to equalise. Second spot kick put United into the lead. Excellent finish off the post for his hat trick. Was everywhere trying to make things happen.

Patrick Dorgu: 7. Good width down the left. Volleyed a set piece corner over the bar. Earned a soft penalty in clash with Artiz Elustondo before his cross for Rasmus Hojlund was jumped on by Alex Remiro. Brought down as he was going clean through which led to red card for Jon Aramburu.

Joshua Zirkzee: 8. Put himself about as ball came into the box and pressed well in advanced position. Good movement and tried some incisive passes including one that released Patrick Dorgu that resulted in a red card for Jon Aramburu. Late shot brought fine save from Alex Remiro and missed late header too.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6. Shot saved by Alex Remiro, some good tricks up front and his cutback was too close to the keeper. Another cut back really should have been put away by out of form Rasmus Hojlund. Set up Bruno Fernandes for his hat trick.

Rasmus Hojlund: 7. Battled with Igor Zubeldia. Good run halted by Igor Zubeldia for the United penalty and a great flick went wide of the back post. Still short of confidence though and fluffed another great chance set up by Alejandro Garnacho in the second half. Set up Diogo Dalot fourth goal.

Toby Collyer (on for Casemiro, 78): No time to mark.

Christian Eriksen (on for Joshua Zirkzee, 89): No time to mark
