Claudio Bravo the penalty hero again as Manchester City see off Leicester City in the Carabao Cup

December 19, 2017 by Paul Chan

LEICESTER CITY 1, MANCHESTER CITY 1 (Manchester City win 4-3 on penalties)

Manchester City made it into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after winning a penalty shoot-out at Leicester City with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo once again the hero.

Bravo sprinted over to the Man City fans to celebrate after saving Riyad Mahrez’ penalty in the shoot-out at the end of another 120 minute drama to keep the Blues in the hunt for trophies on four fronts.

City had been denied in normal time after Jamie Vardy’s spot kick in the seventh minute of eight added minutes at the end of normal time after Kyle Walker had been penalised for a soft foul on Demarai Gray.

All three senior Foxes players had been left out of the starting line-up and Leicester failed to punish a weakened City side in Extra Time with them on the pitch.

City academy product Lukas Nmecha kept his nerve to score one of the shoot-out penalties but Vardy went on to hit his shoot-out spot kick against the post before Mahrez was denied by the Chilean keeper to spark another celebration for the travelling fans.

United lose Antonio Valencia to injury during battling win at West Brom

WEST BROM 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 2

Manchester United won a battling encounter at the Hawthorns to beat West Brom 2-1 and close the gap to title rivals Manchester City back to 11 points but lost captain Antonio Valencia to injury.

Two quick first half goals by Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard saw the Reds race into the lead but they couldn’t despatch the Baggies who threatened to undo United’s first half work by pulling a goal back through Gareth Barry late on.

SWANSEA CITY 0, MANCHESTER CITY 4 Manchester City moved out on their own in the record books with a 15th consecutive Premier League win this season – against basement strugglers Swansea City. Terriers brought down to earth by Willian masterclass during comfortable Chelsea win

Huddersfield Town and Chelsea Lineups Greet Each Other

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1, CHELSEA 3

Willian scored one and made two other Chelsea goals as Huddersfield Town went 3-0 down within 50 minutes at a rainswept John Smith’s Stadium.

Town were unpicked by two first half goals by Tiemoue Bakayoko and Willian as Chelsea bounced back from weekend disappointment against West Ham with a richly deserved performance against a fatigued looking Huddersfield Town side who were down and out after just 50 minutes when Pedro blasted Willian’s layoff past Jonas Lossl.

Laurent Depoitre’s headed goal in injury time was a scant consolation for a Town side who had been throughly outclassed by Chelsea who were on cruise control by the end, going down to an eighth defeat in their last 11 games.

Steve Mounie double fires Huddersfield Town above Brighton

David Wagner's post match press conference after the Huddersfield Town vs Brighton game on Saturday, December 9, 2017

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 2, BRIGHTON 0

A Steve Mounie double in the first half put dominant Huddersfield Town on their way in a very confident win against Brighton.

The Terriers could afford to waste a hatful of chances in the second half before they secured an invaluable three points and leapfrogged their opponents Brighton to go 11th with 18 points after a richly deserved fifth Premier League win of the season and the first since the 1-0 against West Brom at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Town had endured a four game losing streak and hadn’t scored in six since Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre despatched Manchester United at the John Smith’s Stadium in October.

They looked a lot more fluent against Brighton who may have been feeling the effects of a midweek 5-1 home hammering at the hands of Liverpool and the Seagulls faded badly towards the end.
