Pep Guardiola and Manchester City players recognised for highly successful seasons

June 5, 2021 by Paul Chan

Manchester City’s men and women have been recognised by their peers in the Professional Footballers Association and the Premier League after the end of a successful campaign.

City had a clean sweep of Premier League individual awards after winning their third Premier League title in four seasons under Pep Guardiola.

And Guardiola was rewarded by winning his third Premier League Manager of the season award having already landed the Carabao Cup for the fourth season in a row with City.

Ruben Dias helped City keep 15 clean sheets in his 32 Premier League appearances as he added the Premier League Player of the season award to his Football Writers Association award which he won a few weeks ago.

And Phil Foden completed the set of honours for the season just finished by being named Premier League Young Player of the Year having scored 16 goals and 10 assists in the last term.

Six Manchester City men’s team players were named in the PFA Team of the Year.

And the solid defence that took City to the League was recognised with Ederson, Joao Cancelo, John Stones, and Ruben Dias joining attackers Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan in the prestigious PFA list which is voted for by the player’s peers.

Ederson was winning his second consecutive Golden Glove for keeping the most clean sheets last season.

He was helped massively by the three named defenders who helped the Brazilian reach 19 Premier League clean sheets last term – 3 more than Edouard Mendy of Chelsea.

De Bruyne notched up 18 assists and 10 goals while Gundogan top scored with 17 goals including a streak in the early part of this year where he helped the club break the English record for consecutive wins – 21 – and won successive Premier League Player of the Month awards in January and February.

There were four City women – Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, Caroline Weir, and Sam Mewis – named in the PFA WSL Team of the Year for 2021.

City’s women retained last season’s FA Cup and finished second in the WSL standings having battled and gone out to the eventual winners of the Champions League – Barcelona.
