Manchester United have made their first signing of the Erik ten Hag era with the capture of Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia.
Malacia, 26, is a Dutch international and made 136 appearances for Feyenoord alongside five caps for the senior Netherlands national team and will cost the Reds a fee of around £15.7m.
He has signed a four year deal until 2026 with the option of a further year.
The Reds could yet conclude a move for Barcelona midfielder Frankie de Jong who worked with ten Hag together at Ajax but United are facing difficulties to prise him away from the Spanish giants.
United are believed to have agreed a deal to sell Andreas Pereira to Fulham for a fee of up to £10m as they finally started to move on some of their squad.
And with the signing of Malacia there will be pressure to make decisions on the future of at least one of United’s many left backs – with Luke Shaw, Alex Telles, and Brandon Williams on the books.
Speaking to the Manchester United website, Malacia said: “It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us.
“I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.
“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt.
“I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family.
“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for them. Now I’m ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.”
John Murtough, Manchester United football director, said: “Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young footballer with excellent experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and full international honours for the Netherlands.
“We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching team in the years ahead.
“Everyone at Manchester United welcomes Tyrell to the club.”
With United facing a serious rebuilding job to return to the Premier League top table they will need to deal with a summer of strengthening their squad after a summer of high profile departures including Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, and goalkeepers Lee Grant and Dean Henderson – who has agreed a loan deal to Nottingham Forest.
