Manchester United were held to a disappointing draw after Christian Eriksen gave the ball away to allow Sam Lammers to equalise in the second half after the Danish midfielder had put the Reds into the lead in the first half.

Sam Lammers sent an early shot wide for Twente after Bart Van Rooij won the ball off Diogo Dalot at left back following a hard won corner for the Dutch.

The visitors were playing with confidence in an end to end game with chances for both sides until the 35th minute when Diogo Dalot was tackled in the Twente box by Mees Hilgers but the loose ball broke to Christian Eriksen who rifled a rising shot past Lars Unnerstall from 15 yards out – his 3rd goal of the season.

It was end to end stuff for the Dutch who were not afraid to run at United and concede counter attacks to the Reds.

But it was a failure to concentrate that cost United as went cut through the Reds midfield with Bart Van Rooij’s surging run drawing defenders in before Eriksen was caught on the ball after he thought he had won it back.

The ball fell to Sam Lammers who finished off the move with a superb equaliser curled in with his left foot.

After a flurry of substitutions by both sides, the tension levels mounted as United failed to get a winner with two heartstopping injury time attacks at the Stretford End – one saved by Unnerstall one handed from Martinez – while Ugarte went for glory from 27 yards to no avail.

PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 1, FC Twente 1 (Europa League)

Andre Onana: 7. Saw more action than he should have. Tipped away a second half free kick from Anass Salah-Eddine to keep United in the lead.

Noussair Mazraoui: 7. Busy early few minutes and stopped Youri Reeger having a free shot after he had been put through.

Harry Maguire: 6. Beaten by Bart Van Rooij on his way to forcing the FC Twente equaliser. Put under immense pressure by Daan Rots as Twente went for a winner.

Lisandro Martinez: 7. His header was nearly turned into his own net by Mees Hilgers but for a great save by Lars Unnerstall who also denied him in injury time.

Diogo Dalot: 6. Robbed by Bart Van Rooij who carved out a Twente chance. Ha some surging runs from defence but left holes at the back.

Manuel Ugarte: 6. Went about aggressively winning the ball in midfield after slow United start but Twente found a way round him, especially when he committed himself.

Christian Eriksen: 6. In attacking mode. Had a shot saved and then rifled in the opener but later was responsible for losing the ball for the Twente equaliser.

Amad Diallo: 6. Looked to be going clean through when he was brought down by Max Bruns – no reaction from the referee. Not too much impact.

Bruno Fernandes: 6. Had a shot blocked but kept trying to create chances. Late shot was close.

Marcus Rashford: 7. Looks back to his old self with more swagger going forward. Might have done better with a clever through ball by Joshua Zirkzee. Tried some extravagant shots.

Joshua Zirkzee: 6. Smart link play to release Rashford with a back heel. Needs to work on forward play though.

Alejandro Garnacho (on for Amad Diallo 67): 6. Blazed over late on.

Kobbie Mainoo (on for Christian Eriksen, 79): No time to mark.

Mason Mount (on for Joshua Zirkzee, 79): No time to mark

Rasmus Hojlund (Rashford, 79): No time to mark
