Manchester City victims of FA Cup giantkilling after defeat at League One club Wigan Athletic

February 19, 2018 by Tony Bugby

WIGAN ATHLETIC 1, MAN CITY 0

Will Grigg was on fire as he ended Manchester City’s dream of the quadruple in one of the major Emirates FA Cup shocks of all-time.

Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City were humbled by League One Wigan Athletic who progressed to the quarter finals thanks to a late goal from the Northern Ireland international.

Paul Cook’s minnows had already disposed of Premier League clubs Bournemouth and West Ham, but not many gave them much hope of claiming their biggest scalp yet.

Manchester United far from convincing as Romelu Lukaku scores twice to beat Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup

February 17, 2018 by Paul Chan

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0, MANCHESTER UNITED 2

On the evidence of Huddersfield Town’s valiant efforts in the FA Cup against Manchester United they can expect better results from the encouraging work they put in tonight in against teams around them in their battle against relegation.

A lacklustre Manchester United, who created little on the night, soaked up the pressure from Town and scored early in both halves – both goals scored by Romelu Lukaku – to dump the Terriers out of the FA Cup.

There was even time for half time ‘entertainment’ as VAR disallowed a Juan Mata goal for offside just before the break but the Reds will be concerned about a lack of midfield imagination going into the business end of the season as they look towards the Champions League against Sevilla next week.

Wigan get another repeat of FA Cup final against Manchester City in Fifth Round draw

January 29, 2018 by Paul Chan

Revenge could be on the minds of both Manchester clubs following the draw for the Fifth Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup as the remaining Premier League sides were kept apart.

Wigan Athletic and potentially Huddersfield Town could be on the horizon for the Manchester clubs.

Leroy Sane injured during Manchester City’s FA Cup win at Cardiff City

CARDIFF CITY 0, MANCHESTER CITY 2

Manchester City cruised into the Fifth Round of the FA Cup despite losing winger Leroy Sane to a nasty challenge on the stroke of half time against a physical Cardiff City side.

Kevin De Bruyne gave City the lead with a clever free kick after just eight minutes, and Bernardo Silva had a goal questionably disallowed before Raheem Sterling doubled the lead with a rare header.

The Bluebirds were lucky not to get reduced to ten men on the stroke of half time after Joe Bennett cynically hacked down Leroy Sane on the edge of the box with a dangerous tackle after the German had run almost the length of the pitch on a swift break.

Bruno Manga was also in the book for a nasty follow-through on Sergio Aguero, Sane’s replacement, after both sides had tried to add to the scoresheet in the second period before Bennett was finally handed his marching orders in stoppage time for a nasty challenge on Brahim Diaz.

Huddersfield Town must go to a replay after being held by Birmingham City

David Wagner Huddersfield Town vs Birmingham City FA Cup 4th Round 2018

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1, BIRMINGHAM CITY 1 (FA CUP 4th ROUND)

David Wagner’s side were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal and both teams will have to go again in the FA Cup at St Andrew’s after Huddersfield Town were held to a draw by Championship side Birmingham City who did enough to beat the Terriers but for a great late save by Joel Coleman.

Town’s opening goal by Steve Mounie was cancelled out in the second half by Lukas Jutkiewicz. Jutkiewicz had a goal ruled out for offside and had a late effort saved as the visitors finished strongly.
