Sergio Aguero came off the bench to score a dramatic injury-time winner as Manchester City take a slender 2-1 lead to Ashton Gate for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Bristol City.

City certainly needed one of their big guns to overcome a Bristol side that had already beaten four Premier League games in the knockout.

It was cruel on Lee Johnson’s Championship club that produced a heroic display and even spent 11 minutes either side of the break holding the lead through a Bobby Reid penalty.

City equalised through Kevin De Bruyne and had to summon Aguero and Kyle Walker in the latter stages in an effort to conjure a winner.

Both Manchester clubs given away ties in the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup

Both Manchester clubs were given away ties in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup after the draw was made tonight.

Yeovil Town of League 2, the lowest ranked club still in the competition, drew the plum tie of the round and will welcome Manchester United to Huish Park after the Reds beat Derby County on Friday.

The two clubs last met each other in the Third Round in 2015 – also at Huish Park – and on that occasion goals by Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria saw the Reds march on following a 2-0 win on their way to lifting the trophy at Wembley that May under then-boss Louis Van Gaal.

Manchester City, who beat Burnley 4-1 on Saturday, will visit the winner of the replay between Cardiff City of the Championship and League 2 club Mansfield Town.

Manchester City’s FA Cup fortunes turn on controversial free kick against Burnley

MAN CITY 4, BURNLEY 1

Manchester City’s fortunes in their Emirates FA Cup, third-round win against Burnley turned on a controversial free kick.

City were 1-0 behind and had laboured for almost an hour before they equalised with a questionable goal.

If your allegiances were with City it was a stroke of genius, but for the Clarets it was anything but that.

Burnley were still lining up when Ilkay Gundogan took a quick kick and released Sergio Aguero who raced clear to score.

And while the Clarets were still reeling from that body blow, Aguero quickly added a second goal, his 18th of the season and a phenomenal 16 in 16 FA Cup ties for City.

Pep Guardiola hits out at chaotic festive schedule after Manchester City’s home win against Watford

MAN CITY 3, WATFORD 1

Goodness knows what the score might have been had Manchester City not taken their foot off the accelerator early in the game against Watford at the Etihad.

City could conceivably have been 4-0 ahead inside 17 minutes – they were two up – following a whirlwind opening in which they swept aside the visitors.

It was as though City were only playing in first or second gear for the remainder of the game as there was no way back for Watford.

In the end they triumphed with goals from Raheem Sterling, Christian Kabasele’s own goal and Sergio Aguero.

Manchester City’s winning run comes to an end at Crystal Palace as Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne are stretchered off

December 31, 2017 by Paul Chan

CRYSTAL PALACE 0, MANCHESTER CITY 0

There was late drama at Selhurst Park as Luka Milivojevic’s injury time penalty was saved by Ederson in one of the most eventful goalless matches at Crystal Palace as Manchester City’s 18 game winning run came to an end in South London.

Unlike many teams coming up against City, Crystal Palace had a real go and made a game of it at Selhurst Park but City, who lost Gabriel Jesus to a serious looking knee injury early on and Kevin De Bruyne in injury time, could not find a way past their hosts who – in contrast with other teams facing City recently – played a full part in an absorbing game against Pep Guardiola’s team in the first half.

City had hit the woodwork through Sergio Aguero and were denied by last ditch defending and Wayne Hennessey saves while Palace could have snatched a late goal from eight yards in the second half before the injury time drama.

City ended the year on 59 points having dropped their first Premier League points on the road this season, 14 ahead of nearest rivals Chelsea, but will worry about the fitness of Jesus and De Bruyne with a full set of January fixtures ahead.
