Manchester City suffer first home loss in 15 months but still cruise into last eight of Champions League

(Man City won 5-2 on aggregate)

In this season of record-breaking exploits, Manchester City claimed an unwanted one, even though they marched into the semi finals of the Champions League.

City still have to win both games of a two-legged tie in Europe’s elite club competition following their home defeat to FC Basel 1893.

Having said that, the job had already been done following a 4-0 victory in Switzerland and no team had ever lost in the competition from such a position of strength.

This was, however, City’s first home defeat of the season and first loss at the Etihad in 15 months since they were beaten by Chelsea in December 2016.

David De Gea saves poor disjointed Manchester United blushes against an attacking Sevilla side

SEVILLA 0, MANCHESTER UNITED 0

United’s first Champions League knockout stage game since David Moyes’ ill fated season in charge of the Reds saw all eyes on one particular United player – but it wasn’t Paul Pogba – while the home side caught the eye with a staggering 25 shots on goal (with eight on target) to United’s six (with just one on target) as the Reds played out a goalless game in Spain for the fifth time in the last seven.

Game over in Basel as Ilkay Gundogan scores twice in big Manchester City win

FC BASEL 0, MANCHESTER CITY 4

It was game just a quarter of way through this contest in Switzerland as Manchester City raced into a 3-0 lead within 23 minutes through goals by Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, and Sergio Aguero before Gundogan’s second half strike effectively put an end to tonight’s match, and perhaps the tie, with a 4-0 away victory at St Jakob Park.

Makeshift Manchester City go down to first defeat of the season at Shakhtar Donetsk

December 6, 2017 by Paul Chan

SHAKHTAR DONETSK 2, MANCHESTER CITY 1

Shakhtar Donetsk became the first club to beat Manchester City this season, winning 2-1 in Kharkiv to qualify for the knock-out stage of the Champions League after Napoli lost 2-1 at 10-man Feyenoord.

First half goals by Bernard and Ismaily set a motivated Shakhtar on their way to inflicting the first defeat on City since April 5 this year, and while Sergio Aguero’s injury time penalty gave City hope of another miracle, boss Pep Guardiola’s 100th Champions League game ended with the demise of City’s record 20 game winning run even though they had already qualified for the knock-out stage.

It was a night for City’s youngsters and fringe players to try and stake their claim for first team action but instead it was a night to forget for most of them.

Manchester United stretch unbeaten home run to 40 games with victory against CSKA Moscow in Champions League

Man Utd v CSKA Moscow

Manchester United extended their unbeaten home record to a remarkable 40 games to equal a 51-year-old club record with victory against CSKA Moscow.

The win ensured the Reds go into the knockout phase of the Champions League as group A winners, though manager Jose Mourinho played down its significance.

“I am not playing for records – the record I wanted was to win the Europa League for the first time. There are more important things than that, though it is nice,” he said.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in a deadly 66-second spell ensured United headed the section with 15 points from a possible 18.
