Manchester United far from convincing as Romelu Lukaku scores twice to beat Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup

February 17, 2018 by Paul Chan

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0, MANCHESTER UNITED 2

On the evidence of Huddersfield Town’s valiant efforts in the FA Cup against Manchester United they can expect better results from the encouraging work they put in tonight in against teams around them in their battle against relegation.

A lacklustre Manchester United, who created little on the night, soaked up the pressure from Town and scored early in both halves – both goals scored by Romelu Lukaku – to dump the Terriers out of the FA Cup.

There was even time for half time ‘entertainment’ as VAR disallowed a Juan Mata goal for offside just before the break but the Reds will be concerned about a lack of midfield imagination going into the business end of the season as they look towards the Champions League against Sevilla next week.

Captain Fantastic Anthony Gerrard is Oldham Athletic matchwinner against MK Dons

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1, MILTON KEYNES DONS 0 Anthony Gerrard was Oldham Athletic’s captain fantastic as he was their matchwinner in the Sky Bet League One relegation scrap at home to Milton Keynes Dons. The central defender’s first-half header from Ben Pringle’s corner was all that separated the teams in a hugely important game for both […]

Game over in Basel as Ilkay Gundogan scores twice in big Manchester City win

FC BASEL 0, MANCHESTER CITY 4

It was game just a quarter of way through this contest in Switzerland as Manchester City raced into a 3-0 lead within 23 minutes through goals by Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, and Sergio Aguero before Gundogan’s second half strike effectively put an end to tonight’s match, and perhaps the tie, with a 4-0 away victory at St Jakob Park.

Matt Ritchie’s strike condemns Manchester United to defeat after Chris Smalling’s foolish dive at Newcastle dents the Reds title hopes

NEWCASTLE UNITED 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 0

Matt Ritchie scored the only goal in a contest that might have terminally ended Manchester United’s title challenge for this season as Newcastle United beat the Reds 1-0 to win their first home game in the Premier League since October 21.

By Jose Mourinho’s own admission, Newcastle “fought like animals” to outperform the Reds and earn a vital three points which dragged them out of the relegation zone.

Mourinho still hasn’t won at St James’ Park in the Premier League and defeat leaves Manchester United 16 points behind City with 11 games to go and with an increasing prospect of playing for the title at the Etihad in the Manchester Derby on April 7 depending on results.

Huddersfield Town kick off the Year of the Dog with rousing victory over Bournemouth

A first Huddersfield Town goal for Alex Pritchard, a double by Steve Mounie, and a Rajiv van La Parra penalty meant that the Terriers could celebrate a first Premier League win in nine matches as they kickstarted their survival mission with a huge morale boosting victory over Bournemouth.

The bad news, though, is Town may have to do without Aaron Mooy for a period after he went off on a stretcher after jarring his left knee towards the end of the game.

The Terriers got back on the scoresheet for the first time in the Premier League since mid January in their home defeat to West Ham having failed to score in a total of 14 of 26 previous league games this season.

A poor run since December had led to the Terriers slipping into the bottom three with relegation a serious threat but victory temporarily moved them back up to 16th.
