Manchester United guarantee Champions League football following home win against Arsenal

April 29, 2018 by Tony Bugby

MAN UNITED 2, ARSENAL 1

MAROUANE Fellaini’s injury-time winner guaranteed Champions League football for Manchester United, but ended Arsenal’s slender hopes of a top-four finish.

It was also Arsene Wenger’s last visit to Old Trafford as Gunners’ manager and his 60th game against the Reds was one of the most lukewarm.

Northern beasts Manchester City blow Arsenal aside for the second time in four days

ARSENAL 0, MANCHESTER CITY 3

A first half blizzard of goals by Bernardo Silva, David Silva, and Leroy Sane crushed Arsenal’s attempt to go toe to toe with Manchester City following their Carabao Cup heartbreak with three goals in 18 first half minutes of an entirely one sided match in which the Gunners couldn’t even score from the penalty spot in the second half after City took their foot off the gas.

By the 33rd minute of this contest clinical City had scored with each of their last six shots on target against Arsenal – three in the Carabao Cup final and another treble here as the Gunners conceded three goals in the first half of a Premier League game for the first time and wasted a succession of chances to score against their visitors.

How different it might have been if Arsene Wenger’s high risk strategy – to match City man for man and attack them – had not spectacularly backfired at a freezing underpopulated Emirates Stadium as City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 16 points.

It was the City manager’s first piece of silverware in English football as his side comprehensively beat the Gunners at the end of a crazy week. The triumph at […]

Manchester United thank David De Gea for weathering Arsenal storm but lose Paul Pogba for next week’s Derby

ARSENAL 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 3

Manchester United kept the heat up on their title rivals Manchester City by winning handsomely at Arsenal to reduce Pep Guardiola’s side to a five point lead ahead of City’s home game against West Ham on Sunday.

It was a stylish win which should silence some of the criticism of Jose Mourinho’s ‘defensive’ tactics in the way that his United side applied three killer blows from just 4 shots on targets while David De Gea kept out a barrage of Arsenal attacks.

Both sides were unchanged from their last matches but this match didn’t seem to suffer from any perceived tiredness.
