Game over in Basel as Ilkay Gundogan scores twice in big Manchester City win

February 13, 2018 by Paul Chan

FC BASEL 0, MANCHESTER CITY 4

It was game just a quarter of way through this contest in Switzerland as Manchester City raced into a 3-0 lead within 23 minutes through goals by Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, and Sergio Aguero before Gundogan’s second half strike effectively put an end to tonight’s match, and perhaps the tie, with a 4-0 away victory at St Jakob Park.

Manchester City’s FA Cup fortunes turn on controversial free kick against Burnley

MAN CITY 4, BURNLEY 1

Manchester City’s fortunes in their Emirates FA Cup, third-round win against Burnley turned on a controversial free kick.

City were 1-0 behind and had laboured for almost an hour before they equalised with a questionable goal.

If your allegiances were with City it was a stroke of genius, but for the Clarets it was anything but that.

Burnley were still lining up when Ilkay Gundogan took a quick kick and released Sergio Aguero who raced clear to score.

And while the Clarets were still reeling from that body blow, Aguero quickly added a second goal, his 18th of the season and a phenomenal 16 in 16 FA Cup ties for City.

Claudio Bravo the penalty hero again as Manchester City see off Leicester City in the Carabao Cup

December 19, 2017 by Paul Chan

LEICESTER CITY 1, MANCHESTER CITY 1 (Manchester City win 4-3 on penalties)

Manchester City made it into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after winning a penalty shoot-out at Leicester City with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo once again the hero.

Bravo sprinted over to the Man City fans to celebrate after saving Riyad Mahrez’ penalty in the shoot-out at the end of another 120 minute drama to keep the Blues in the hunt for trophies on four fronts.

City had been denied in normal time after Jamie Vardy’s spot kick in the seventh minute of eight added minutes at the end of normal time after Kyle Walker had been penalised for a soft foul on Demarai Gray.

All three senior Foxes players had been left out of the starting line-up and Leicester failed to punish a weakened City side in Extra Time with them on the pitch.

City academy product Lukas Nmecha kept his nerve to score one of the shoot-out penalties but Vardy went on to hit his shoot-out spot kick against the post before Mahrez was denied by the Chilean keeper to spark another celebration for the travelling fans.
